Swindon's Ridgeway Rise launches new history programme
Swindon's Ridgeway Rise have again demonstrated why they are one of the south-west’s leading care homes with the introduction of their new historical talks programme that gives residents the chance to immerse themselves in the stories of old.
While the majority of the care industry looks for ways to cut costs, this Blunsdon-based facility is constantly thinking of ways to engage and improve residents’ quality of life.
Their latest programme is aimed at encouraging group conversations, delving into stories through the ages, and taking part in activities that get residents up on their feet and interacting with other residents and Ridgeway Rise staff.
Colin is the home’s new activity coordinator and has enjoyed initial success with his fascinating historical talks sessions. His historical knowledge is incredible and Colin’s ability to make history fun again is just one reason why Ridgeway Rise residents and families are so supportive of the new sessions.
The home has supported the new programme by additionally investing in an activity trolley that enhances sessions and brings historical battles, inventions, and famous characters to life.
Every extra effort is made to ensure residents have the ideal opportunity to reminisce with friends and family about topics that capture their attention and use their imagination to relate to the sessions put on by Colin.
Last month’s breakthrough sessions saw Colin tell the life story of much-loved English writer, Beatrix Potter, and her amazing life. Best known for her tales of Peter Rabbit. Colin managed to get a cut out of Peter Rabbit from the local cinema as a special addition to the session.
The residents gathered to hear the talk, where Colin took everyone on a journey back in time, speaking about the authors literature and how her talent was overlooked by her mother.
Colin dressed up for the occasion and with his resources and knowledge and created a buzzing atmosphere in the home that made it a really enjoyable experience.
To really add to the occasion, our kitchen prepared cream scones and coffee for the residents to enjoy whilst they were listening to Colin. Residents then had a photo session with Peter Rabbit and an opportunity to ask Colin questions.
The next historical talks session saw Ridgeway Rise put on an antiques roadshow afternoon whereby residents who had unearthed some of their most prized possessions were able to have them appraised and their history unveiled.
Some of Ridgeway’s shock revelations were a historical vase that is over 160years old, a fascinating piece of war-period art made during the trenches of WW1, and real Roman tools crafted over 3500 years ago.
Ridgeway Rise have again demonstrated they are thought-leaders in the care industry with their historical sessions invention another great example of how residents’ wellbeing is the focal point of their attention. Find out more about Ridgeway Rise care home and their historical talks HERE.
