Swindon Service Combines Learning With Living
An innovative supported housing scheme for young people with learning disabilities in Swindon has officially opened its doors for the fist time.
Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL), the national supported housing provider, has worked in tandem with Uplands Educational Trust (UET), an educational charity for young people with special educational needs, to develop Maryfield.
The scheme is to provide high quality, safe and secure accommodation for up to 11 young people aged 19 to 25, which also includes 24-hour support with a training facility to help them work towards independent living.
On Tuesday the 10th of February, Maryfield opened its doors at the inaugural event attended by service users and their families, SSL head of service Sara Keetley and UET executive head teacher Jackie Smith.
Under the partnership, SSL will be responsible for the building’s operation as well as the provision of specialist support staff for clients with learning disabilities including autism, hearing and visual impairments, and complex medical needs.
The clients are referred to the service from UET, which identifies young people in need of support and looks after the process of admission.
Once referred, they shall receive one-to-one support with aspects of domestic skills, completing forms, personal care, managing money, medical needs, transport, personal care routines, personal safety, travel, training and behavioural and communication skills.
The former sheltered housing scheme that is Maryfield, has been refurbished by SSL with an investment of over £670,000.
The opening event featured a tour, speeches as well as networking session for guests, before guest of honour the Right Reverend Bishop of Swindon Lee Rayfield cut the ribbon to officially open the scheme.
Steve Coare, SSL area service manager said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with UET to deliver this service.
“By providing housing and support to individuals to help them to live more independently, as well as have access to education through UET, we can make a real difference to the lives of young people.
“This was a fantastic opening event that marked the success of our partnership and the investment we have made, not just in the building itself, but also in the futures of the young people that will be living and learning here.”
Executive head teacher of Uplands School, The Learning Centre and Trustee of UET, Jackie Smith added: “Maryfield will provide a vibrant and caring community where independent living and learning skills are developed to ensure that young people reach their full potential.
“We will provide a truly inclusive living environment where all contributions are valued and where the young people can expect exceptional care, support and guidance in a safe nurturing community, with the chance to socialise with others of a similar age.”
