TGt Meets... Nikki Smith
We spoke to Nikki Smith, the manager at New College's Distinction, to find out more about the salon and what it's like working in the hair and beauty industry!
How long have you been working in the hairdressing/beauty industry and how did you get started?
For me, it all started with an Apprenticeship at Goldsworthy’s. It was a great starting place and a fantastic way to learn the trade, in a working environment. It’s similar to the way our students have the opportunity to provide treatments to external clients in our salon. I’ve now been in the industry for 35 years and have loved every minute of it.
Describe Distinction in 3 words…
Professional, inviting, friendly
What makes Distinction different from its competitors?
Distinction works in a way that students have the opportunity to work in small class sizes, meaning they get full support and can really focus on delivering the best possible treatments. We’re a forward thinking salon and are always looking for ways to improve our service.
What is the most important hair/beauty advice that you can give?
I would say that if a professional within the industry offers you advice with regards to treatments or products, follow it. They deliver these treatments and use these products day in, day out, so they get to know what may work for certain clients and what may not. I’d also say good diet, water, exercise are a great help for keeping hair and skin in the best possible condition.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about entering the hair and beauty industry?
Go for it. I personally think it’s the most amazing vocation and I wouldn’t change the experience that I’ve had. The opportunities are vast and you can really narrow down an area you enjoy or are particularly skilled at, whether that’s hair, nails, skincare, massage. There are so many options; the world is your oyster!
Will there be any changes happening within Distinction in the near future?
Hopefully expansion. We’re looking to boost certain areas and offer more services in both barbering and nail tech in the future.
Describe New College in three words...
Vibrant, buzzing, fresh
What's the most rewarding part of your job?
Helping young people achieve their own personal goals is so rewarding and sometimes it really is against all odds. Seeing our students grow as young professionals and offer fantastic treatments to external clients is a fantastic feeling.
What are your plans for the future?
I hope to develop and grow the Distinction Salons further to make it the best it can possibly be, providing a high standard of teaching to students and an amazing client experience.
