TGt Meets... Will Whitmore, DB Max

After a landmark year celebrating their tenth birthday, we caught up with Will Whitmore from DB Max to talk triathlons, trends for the new year, and where it all began.

Where is home and why?
Home is in Wiltshire, between Trowbridge and Melksham. After working and studying away for fifteen years, I ended up back in the area where I grew up.

Describe your business in one sentence…
A fitness event and sports timing company, dedicated to providing a quality race day experience anywhere you see the DB Max brand.

How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I used to organize events as a hobby – primarily so I could race them myself.

What’s been your biggest achievement to date?
Possibly organizing the UK’s biggest duathlon outside of London. Or possibly providing the results service for the two top UK Running Awards half marathons.

What are your professional goals?
Always to be the best. Whether it was chess or video games as a kid, to fitness competitions and sport as an adult, or to DB Max as a business – I’ve always tried to win. If you lose, you can always have another go!

The popularity of Triathlon’s/racing has risen dramatically in recent years, why do you think that is?
I think there’s been a generic trend to get more involved in fitness activities in the UK – cycling, running and CrossFit have all boomed in recent years as well as triathlon.

Can you foresee any new fitness trends emerging in 2017?
I think the one I’m noticing has probably been emerging for a while now – people want an experience. Maybe that means they want a crazy, brutal, event rather than a straight-forward triathlon, or maybe they want a whole heap of bells and whistles to compliment their 10k run. The event experience is paramount.

What’s your favourite discipline out of swimming, cycling and running?
Definitely cycling. Short distances. I wish I’d met Chris Hoy when I was a kid.

How do you like to spend your time off?
Time off..? What’s that..?!
