‘Tour De Swindon’ Draws to A Close With Day of Cycling Fun
On Sunday, Swindon families joined in celebrations to mark the end of a hugely successful first ‘Tour de Swindon,’ on the same day that Chris Froome pedalled to victory for Great Britain in the 100th Tour de France.
‘Tour de Swindon’ saw 3 weeks of free walking and cycling events put on by national charity Sustrans and Swindon Travel Choices, to celebrate the Tour de France locally.
Over 300 people took part in the Grand Finale event, which was held at Coate Water Park. The “smoothie-maker bike” proved a big hit especially amongst the children, allowing them to pedal their own fresh fruit smoothie, and families took part in “cycle orienteering” along the town’s traffic-free cycle paths.
A ‘Bike Doctor’ was also on hand for free bike safety check ups and maintenance advice, along with free bike security marking. The events culminated with a prize-giving ceremony at 3pm, for winners of the Active Swindon Challenge.
Ben Spencer, Sustrans Project Coordinator, said “It was fantastic to meet such a range of people – from children with gleaming, brand-new, first bikes to riders and bikes that had covered many miles as part of the active cycle challenge.”
“It was a delight to be able to present a whole bunch of well-deserved prizes to new, returning and experienced riders – roll-on next year!”
