When and where to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower tonight

UK Stargazers are in for a treat tonight as the Perseid Meteor Shower reaches its peak. This annual celestial event, which has been active since July 17 and will continue until August 24, is set to put on a spectacular show between tonight, August 12, and dawn on August 13.

The best time to view the Perseids is between midnight and 5:30 am, when the skies will be darkest.
Fortunately, the moon will set below the horizon around 10:30 pm, minimising light pollution and providing optimal conditions for viewing.

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of the meteors, it's best to find a location with minimal artificial light. Ideal spots include the countryside, parks, or any place where you can shield yourself from street lamps. If you can't venture far, simply turning your back to the nearest light source can also improve your chances of seeing the shower.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is a highlight of the astronomical calendar, known for its high hourly rate and bright, often colorful meteors. The smaller meteors typically vaporise as they enter Earth’s atmosphere, leaving behind bright trails of light, while larger ones can explode into fireballs, creating a breathtaking display.

Don't miss your chance to witness one of the most dramatic events in the night sky. Whether you're a dedicated meteor hunter or simply someone looking to enjoy a peaceful night under the stars, tonight’s Perseid Meteor Shower promises to be an unforgettable experience.
