August Talk with Amy Jayne Grant

August is almost over – it’s been the month of holidays, summer fun and time off for many people. So how have small business owners coped with the month often known as ‘silly season’?

Today we’re talking to Amy Jayne Grant who works as general manager and event coordinator at the House of St John’s, which is a workplace powered by social purpose, based 1 Queen Square, Bath. House of St John’s offers luxury serviced offices, co-working, and communal workspaces.

How has August been for your business?
August is the holiday month, so it’s been a great time for reviewing our progress and planning how we continue to go above and beyond for our clients as we move into the latter part of year. We have a range of exciting events launching in September, as well as a variety of new products being prepared as we speak, so keep an eye out for announcements in the coming weeks!

What were your personal plans for this month? Can you give us a ‘tip’ for places to visit during this summer month?
I love the great outdoors, so I’ve spent some time enjoying the British summer with my friends. I definitely recommend a visit the American History Museum and walking their beautiful gardens- it overlooks an Area of Outstanding Beauty, and you can visit the museum as well to explore the art. 

Did you know August 21 was World Entrepreneurs Day? What does this word mean to you and do you apply it to yourself?
For me, an entrepreneur is imaginative and courageous. They create ideas and are willing to push them out into the world, whatever the odds.

Can you name one business you’d like to give a summer shout out too? Who has gone the extra mile for you recently?
Simon Tapscott from Circus Magazine for being a massive advocate of our work and always providing support and advice along the way. We love working with Circus magazine, everything they produce is to the highest level and they always go above and beyond whenever the House is featured.

We are in a cost-of-living crisis at the moment? Is that impacting you at all in life or business? Do you have any money-saving tips you can share?
Of course, it’s a very worrying time. I live by myself- if you exclude my dog, Ted – and if the cost of living continues to keep rising the way it is, I’m going to have to reassess my living options. I love where I live and this possibility of having to move is really quite stressful!

In terms of tips- I no longer eat out at lunch. Instead, I always cook a little extra the night before- I find I save around £10 a day with this simple change.

Have you got any events planned for the autumn you’d like to shout about – either that you are running or attending?
We run our Bath Girls in Business event on the first Thursday of every month. It’s a lovely evening of prosecco and networking shared by a range of women from across Bath and the surrounding area. Bath Girls in Business aims to build a community of like-minded individuals who can come together to share ideas, whilst making new connections and friends within the city.
