Dave Nelson from Truffle & Thyme shares what's happening in his business during March!
It’s March! The first month of Spring and the month the clocks have just gone forward so it's lighter nights and less time asleep! It’s also the Budget this month! What does the world of business look like this week?
Up today is Dave Nelson, owner of Truffle & Thyme who are a gifting and grazing company, based in Sherston near Malmesbury. They provide everything from picnic style grazing boxes as gifts and treats, to Christmas hampers, and full catering options from x10 – 300 for parties, weddings and events in both the private and corporate world.
How is March looking for you in your business?
With the quiet, cold and dark months of January and February thankfully behind us, March suddenly sees a flurry of activity. The daffodils, snow drops and crocuses appear; Mother’s Day is upon us; the lighter evenings, meteorological Spring and Easter – and all are a very welcome prospect! As a result of all of this, March tends to see a shift in bookings for events, as people starts to plan their diaries and parties for their Spring and Summer ahead.
The Budget takes place on March 6. Is this relevant to you? What are you hoping to see?
The big question for me will be whether the Government increases the VAT threshold and if they drop the rate of VAT in Hospitality. As a business I’m just beginning to have to think about going VAT registered, but if the threshold is indeed raised, it will mean I can hold off for a while longer.
March is also Mother’s Day. Is this an important day for your business?
Mother’s Day sees the gifting side of Truffle & Thyme ramp up after a quieter couple of months. Our Afternoon Tea grazing boxes are always a firm favourite, and the Mother’s Day weekend sees us delivering all over Wiltshire and the Cotswolds.
Would you like to share your thoughts about your mother, a mother figure in your life or your life with a mother?
For me, Mother’s Day is a day where I’m somewhat split down the middle. It’s busy in the business, with me out delivering throughout the weekend, but I have a wife and young family at home, so it definitely comes with its own challenges. It also tends to leave me pondering, somewhat, as I lost my own mother to cancer when I was 13-year-old, so Mother’s Day has its own connotations on that front.
In the yearly cycle of your business, what do you expect during March?
March is a month of hope. After the madness of December, January and February in the catering world can often leave you feeling a bit dejected, so March can’t come soon enough.
