Libby Walklett of The Ethical Bookkeeper is sharing what she's looking forward to in 2024!
January is in full swing and we’ve been talking to small businesses about their plans for 2024.
Up today is Libby Walklett of The Ethical Bookkeeper who is sharing with us what she is looking forward to this year.
What big things are you looking forward to in 2024?
As a business owner with a passion for supporting local businesses, I'm particularly excited about expanding my network in 2024. I love meeting new people, and I’m eager to reach out to those smaller businesses who might not have the need for a full-time bookkeeper but want high quality, professional support.
I'm looking forward to attending a number of accountancy events. They offer a fantastic opportunity to connect, exchange insights, and stay updated on the latest industry trends and developments in tech.
This year is a Leap Year. Does that mean anything to you?
A leap year? It sounds like the perfect opportunity to take a day off and go to watch a musical! One of my hobbies is performing in multiple local ‘amdram’ societies, and you just can't beat a few hours of escapism.
Can you share your business ethics for 2024? How do you want your brand to come across?
Ethics are at the heart of everything I do. As an accountant, I am obligated to uphold the highest ethical standards. Beyond this, I run my business in a manner that is ethical, transparent, and socially responsible. I want my brand to be recognised for its commitment to these values, fostering trust and respect among my clients, partners, and community.
What are you planning to do differently, or better, in 2024?
In 2024, I'm committed to achieving a better balance between my professional and personal life. I'll prioritise taking holidays to recharge and re-energise, ensuring that I come to work with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. I'll try to be more mindful of my time, ensuring that my generosity in offering free consultations does not come at the expense of my own well-being!
What are you doing for charity or community this year?
My commitment to giving back to the community remains unwavering. I'll continue my volunteer work as a trustee and council member for the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), as well as serving as Chair of the Gloucestershire AAT Branch.
In 2023 I offered a free 3-hour bookkeeping workshop, and 3 one-to-one sessions at The Growth Hub, so I hope I can offer a repeat performance. Anyone who knows me, knows I will help whoever, and whenever, I can.
This year will be a big year of sport – most notably the Olympics and Paralympics? If you enjoy these events, can you name those moments you watched/experienced which have stayed with you? Why?
While I'm not an avid sports fan, I admire the camaraderie and resilience exhibited by athletes. The Olympic Games and Paralympics have consistently showcased the unwavering determination and exceptional talent of individuals from around the world. These competitions serve as a powerful reminder of the human capacity to achieve extraordinary feats, often against all odds.
There are multiple ‘awareness’ days & weeks & months in January 2024 – could you pick just one and say why you’ll be engaging with it?
Blue Monday holds a special significance for me. Mental health is a topic that resonates deeply, as I have connections who grapple with various challenges, particularly business owners who often feel isolated and lack support. To address this, I offer confidential support to anyone seeking help, without judgment. Whether it's a casual chat over coffee or a virtual conversation, I would never want anyone to go through their struggles alone. This commitment is fuelled by two special friends who have lost members of their families to suicide. Their stories have reinforced my belief in the importance of open communication, empathy, and the power of sharing our feelings.
