Let's Talk
Choosing a chest of drawers
A chest of drawers serves a dual purpose in the bedroom, providing storage as well as decoration. If wardrobes are built in, the chest may even be the central focus of your room. You may be surprised, however, at the many different styles there are to choose from, ranging from traditional to modern.
Traditional style
Traditional-style chests are made of wood such as oak and pine and often feature decorative elements including ornate handles and curved feet. The wood can be natural, distressed, or painted to fit in with your bedroom decor. With its classic look, a wood chest of drawers works with most decor schemes but it can be heavy to move. Something to consider if you like to rearrange your rooms or are planning a house move. A wooden Bachelor's chest features small drawers on top and longer ones underneath. It is generally narrow in design while a wider Gentleman's chest offers more storage with deeper drawers. Sometimes, it also includes a hanging section. The tallest of all is the Tallboy. These are generally narrow with shallower drawers. They were traditionally meant for storing lingerie but are also useful for accessories, toiletries, and swimwear.
The Combi chest
The Combi chest is similar in design to the Bachelor's and Gentleman's chests, but is generally narrower. It often features central drawers with cupboards on either side. This gives flexible storage for bulkier items such as winter woollies, bedding, and towels.
Industrial lines
Industrial-style chests of drawers have been popular in recent years, especially in loft conversions. They can be made of rustic materials such as distressed wood or more lightweight metal. Metal, however, may not be as durable as wood and can have sharp edges and corners. They're not the best choice if children are around.
Media chests
If you like to relax in bed while watching TV or listening to music, a media chest provides a place for your entertainment devices with storage underneath. If they're purpose-built, they will have openings at the back to keep cables tidily stored.
Get a contemporary look
Clean simple lines and veneer woods in pale natural or pastel shades are characteristic of contemporary chests of drawers. They're lighter and easier on the budget than traditional wood chests. If you want a Scandi vibe in your bedroom, contemporary chests of drawers are perfect for creating it. The Commode chest is one type of contemporary chest to look out for. Its short legs and absence of visible handles give it a sleek and elegant appearance.
Keep it modern and minimalist
Simple design elements, smooth surfaces in neutral whites and gray, chrome legs, and sleek handles create a modern minimalist look. These minimalist designs often combine drawers with open shelving. Use these to display a piece of modern sculpture, or add boxes in toning shades to store bits and pieces out of sight.
