The opening of the Orbital Store means there are now three Lidl’s in Swindon, with Bright St and Barnfield Rd the others within the town, although this is now the first Lidl in the SN25 area.
The Orbital store will face tough competition with Asda previously dominating the North Swindon shopping district, although with traditionally cheaper prices than Asda an influx of shoppers is expected.
The supermarket has taken over the space previously vacated by Homebase, and boasts a fully-functional kitchen and bakery, as well as having customer toilets and self-service checkout machines.
45 new jobs have been created in the area as a result of the new store opening.
Speaking at the grand opening, store manager Mark Wright said:
“There was demand for the new store and a lot of customers in the Swindon stores were asking for more and questioned why we didn’t have one in the Orbital area,” he said.
“It’s been going on for a while now and we have a lot of happy customers so far.
“In this store we’ve got a staffing level of 45 employees which is quite a lot for a Lidl store.
“We’re open from 8am in the morning till 10pm at night Monday through till Saturday and then 10am till 4pm on Sundays,” he added.
The new opening comes just days after the Lidl brand announced they were planning to open another store in Swindon’s Greenbridge retail park later this year.
