5 Things We Learnt: Swindon Town v Stevenage

SWINDON TOWN ran out 1-0 winners against Stevenage on Tuesday night as Richie Wellens' side secured their first win in six games. Total Sport Swindon's Rajan Hothi gives his analysis on '5 things we learned' following the result.

Diallang Jaiyesimi gives Town new options 

Making his first cameo since the opening day, Diallang Jaiyesimi impressed off the bench after replacing Kaiyne Woolery. The Norwich-loanee looked a constant threat for the Stevenage back-line and was unfortunate not to score following a smart double-save from Paul Farman. 

His pace and tricky runs gave Town more of an attacking outlet in the second-half. Wellens toyed with the possibility of starting Jaiyesimi on Tuesday night, and his 30-minute cameo wouldn't have done any harm to his chances of starting on the weekend against Crawley. 

Patience is required

It wasn't a classy Swindon performance, and it took Town until the 90th minute to break a resolute Boro side down, but this team will require patience. 

With the way Wellens wants his team to play, against sides like Stevenage who will set-up with five at the back and sit deep, it will take time for Swindon to break these sorts of teams down. It needs patience from the fans and a bit of belief that they can break them down. 

Moans, groans and frequent cries of "forwards" from the Town faithful was noticed by Wellens who called for more support from the fans in his post-match comments.  

Time is running out for Woolery

Since his move to SN1 in the summer of 2017, Woolery has shown flashes of brilliance but has mostly flattered to deceive during his time with the club. 

Woolery has struggled for consistency and wasn't effective enough against Stevenage last night. He has undoubtedly got talent and potential, but after Jaiyesimi did more in 30-minutes than Woolery did in 60, the 24-year-old needs to show Wellens more to warrant a starting spot. 

Perhaps Woolery needs to find a different club to unlock his potential, as under three different managers at Town, he hasn't been able to show why Swindon splashed out £350,000 on his signature two years ago. 

Steven Benda is impressing as number one

Since coming into the starting XI, Steven Benda has cut an assured figure between the posts and did well last night as he kept a clean sheet.

Despite not being called into action too often, Benda did the basics well and was on-hand to keep Boro at bay when called upon. 

With Luke McCormick struggling with confidence, Benda looks to have nailed down the starting spot for the time being, and the on-loan Swansea 'keeper is showing encouraging signs so far.

Anthony Grant is vital to Swindon success

Anthony Grant's signing on deadline-day wasn't met with much enthusiasm, but the tough-tackling midfielder has settled in well at SN1. 

Another confident display in the midfield saw Grant find a Town shirt with roughly every pass, and he was on-hand to break up Stevenage attacks and give the ball to more attack-minded players. 

Grant has possibly slipped under the radar, but his work is instrumental to any success Swindon may have. A consistent performer in the middle of the park, it would be worth Town trying to secure the services of the 32-year-old permanently in January.
