Ajose Praises The Importance of Obika

Town forward Nicky Ajose has been in blistering form of late, finding the back of the net in habitual fashion to put himself second in the League One goal scoring charts.

After hitting a fine hat-trick against Blackpool on Saturday, Ajose was quick to praise those around him for playing their part and enabling him to focus on his game.

Ajose saved special mention for his fellow strike partner Jon Obika, whose ball holding skills and physical game play have allowed the number 10 to flourish in recent weeks.

"Jon is a very good player, he's a physical presence. He does a lot of work for the team and takes a lot of hits and puts in a really good shift every week.

"He's really important to the team. I think when he's not playing we seem to miss him," said Ajose.

With Obika and Ajose menacing around the box, the Robins have been able to adapt their style to pepper the opposition box with crosses, as evidenced in Saturday's encounter against Blackpool.

Town's equalising goal came courtesy of a teasing near post cross catching keeper Colin Doyle off guard, forcing an error and allowing Ajose to capitalise.

"As a striker you want the ball in the box, so when it goes in there the percentages are that they (the defence) are going to make mistakes. The keeper had the first one and we managed to equalise from that," Ajose commented.

The trio of goals now stands as the second hat-trick scored during the former Manchester United academy player's career, and Ajose admitted Saturday's was probably the best.

"They're both really special to me, but I don't remember much of the first one now so I'm going to say this one was the best," said Ajose.

Despite another three points collected, the striker conceded that the Robins have to work harder to make sure sloppy goals aren't given away to the opposition. Goals which on other day could be the difference between three points or none.

"Obviously it's not good enough really, we keep doing it (conceding early)" said Ajose.

"It's been a good spectacle for the fans coming back 3-2, but in all honesty we need to be keeping zero and scoring three goals. Two from set pieces is not really good enough," the forward added.

Nicky Ajose's hat-trick exploits also saw him make the League One team of the week. Read more here.
