Duo on target to ensure Swindon Town retain League Two status
Goals from Williams Kokolo and in-form Paul Glatzel ensured Swindon Town were mathematically safe in League Two, following a 2-0 win at Barrow.
Kokolo scored his first Swindon goal after 35 minutes at Holker Street, having latched onto George McEachran’s pass and fired the ball into the top corner.
The visitors then had a second before the break. Former Liverpool man Glatzel sprung the hosts’ offside trap before applying a neat finish to record his fourth goal in as many games.
Victory was also interim head coach Gavin Gunning’s first win on the road since he took over in January.
And the Dubliner insisted he could blood some more youngsters in his side now the club were mathematically safe.
He told BBC Radio Wiltshire: “Listen, it’s not been the best of seasons – we’re realistic.
“But you’ve got to give the young lads a chance and see if they are ready to play men’s football.
“You don’t want to throw them in at the deep end and let them sink but I think some of them are probably ready.
“Some of the other lads have to get minutes. Some played today, who were fantastic, so I think it’s really good for us.
“People were obviously getting a bit jittery and panicky, which is fine, but I think hopefully now we can put the next four results together and get four wins.”
The result was also the first time Town had won away from home on a Saturday all season.
Gunning added: “It’s not great. Listen, no-one is proud of how we’ve done this season. The first eight games are a million years ago in terms of where we are at.
“But we’ve just got to bounce and be consistently going towards next season.”
The victory put Town 19th in the table, with 50 points from 42 league games played. They host AFC Wimbledon next Saturday (3pm).
