High standards will stop complacency says Baudry

MATHIEU BAUDRY admits that the high standards at Swindon Town is creating healthy competition amongst players as the club push for promotion back to League One this season. Total Sport Swindon’s Ryan Walker spoke to the STFC defender ahead of tonight’s clash against Colchester United.

Three back-to-back league victories have seen Swindon skyrocket to second in the League Two standings as high goalscoring performances have created a feel-good factor around SN1. Speaking ahead of tonight’s clash, however, Baudry highlighted how complacency must not creep into the squads game with competition amongst the ranks keeping standards high.

"It’s always a balance between being confident and being complacent,” said Baudry.

“At the moment the lads are just expressing themselves and the gaffer is trying to keep us grounded.

“In this league, nothing is granted and every game is different.

“We’ve got to keep getting the basics right,” he added.

“We’ve got healthy competition in the squad and also have players coming back from injury like Doughts [Michael Doughty] and Zeki [Fryers] so there is good competition.

“The staff are on us as well and if in training they see something then they will let you know.

“It’s a long season and this is only the start,” said Baudry.

Victory over Macclesfield at the weekend saw Swindon record their first home clean sheet of the season. And whilst performances have been positive, Baudry admitted that failure to keep more clean-sheets has been frustrating.

“It’s been a bit frustrating in the games when we didn’t get a clean sheet because we felt we deserved them,” Baudry said.

“We haven’t been conceding a lot of chances in games and we’ve limited teams chances.

"If we keep doing the right things and restrict teams to a few chances then we will concede fewer goals.

“We have a lot of possession and sometimes it’s a bit risky but we’ve been managing well,” he said.

“We’ve got a good group of lads and the standards are very high,

“When you lose the ball you feel a bit like an idiot because there is not many people giving it away as the standards are really high.

“It’s good and we now just have to keep it going,” added Baudry.

Good on-pitch performances this season has seen a rise in matchday attendances as Swindon look to earn promotion. Speaking on the support from the STFC fans, the defender explained how the positive energy within the County Ground is spurring the squad on.

“You can feel the positive energy in the stadium on matchdays,” said Baudry.

“The fans are really supporting the teams and enjoying the football we are playing.

“They’ve had a few frustrating seasons so it’s time to give them something to cheer about,” he said.
