Website 0330 002 1993After arriving at SN1 in 2018, Manchester-born Wellens led Swindon to promotion from League Two last season, becoming division champions in the process.
But a difficult summer transfer window saw Wellens lose a number of key players including the likes of Eoin Doyle and Jerry Yates, whilst also missing out on crucial signings that he deemed necessary for Swindon to mount a promotion push in League One this season.
Amidst the financial problems facing EFL clubs due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Wellens accepted that he would have to make do with his current crop of players that currently see Swindon sitting in 20th position of the League One table, and when speculation about him moving to Salford, Wellens retorted that his loyalty to Swindon Town should never be questioned.
In a statement on the Swindon Town FC website, the club said:
"We would like to thank Richie for his efforts while in charge of the club, especially after our promotion-winning season last year and wish him every success in his new role and for the future."
Under Richie Wellens, Swindon fans enjoyed their most successful campaign in recent times and his eye-catching playing-style named 'Wellensball' by supporters endeared him to the STFC faitful and instilled belief in a club that had been on a slippery slope down the footballing period.
Assistant coach Noel Hunt will take over the hotseat as interim manager whilst the club look for a successor to come in and take over.
