Buglass Eyes Top Spot As Wildcats Scoop Max Points

In form Swindon Wildcats D-man Callum Buglass has told Total Sport his side now need to aim for the top of the table, following an incredible four point weekend against league leaders MK Lightning and Peterborough Phantoms.

Buglass, who featured midweek for Great Britain, put in two solid performances over the weekend, as Wildcats defied the odds and picked up full points on opposition ice.

Swindon had to scrap hard for their win in Cambridgeshire, after going 1-0 up in the first period against the Phantoms and defending their prized lead thereafter.

Speaking following a frantic end to the third period in Peterborough, Buglass told Total Sport: "It wasn't so much relief but joy really. When that final buzzer went we knew it was finally over.

"We did have to work hard. This (Peterborough Planet Ice) is a horrible place to come and a horrible team to play - they're top of the league for a reason and we had to grind it out all night," Buglass added.

Earlier in the season, Wildcats left Peterborough on the sore end of a 6-1 demolition. This was something which played in the mind of the players, Buglass admitted, with the intent to seek retribution.

"You don't want to get beat again," Buglass explained.

"We come here three times a year and we don't want to get beat three times. We brought the game to them this time, we knew what the conditions were and what we had to work with. We stuck at it and ground it out."

Finding himself up against the full brunt of Phantoms' top imports for the majority of the night, Buglass remained unfazed throughout, later admitting this aspect of ice hockey is one he relishes the most.

"I know Harvey (Stead) and myself love challenges and to go up against top guys all of the time is something we want to do," said Buglass.

"We want to play against the best and as a team we want to be the best. If we can improve that by playing against their top line, or the best players in their roster then we're going to be playing hard every night," he added.

With the Phantoms win coming as Buglass' third game within the same week, after representing Great Britain the previous Wednesday, the Welsh D-man admitted he was fresh and ready to go.

Buglass said: "I was feeling fine, I normally train with Cardiff in the week so I was good to go. I didn't train with Cardiff this week so I just had the one GB game, and then the two games this weekend."

In a hot run of form right now, the Wildcats' number 45 has no plans to slow down, but is looking to add a measure of consistency to his game.

"I'm happy with my hockey right now, but I want to keep that consistency and keep it going right through to the end of the season. If I make a mistake I have to bounce back from it, but finding consistency is the main thing.

"We aim for the top now, as we always do. We want to get to the top of the league and we proved it tonight by beating these guys (Phantoms) and Milton Keynes last night. We've proved that we can beat these teams but it is just us as a team now - we need to find consistency and if we can do that we'll be fine," Buglass added.
