Buzzer Report: Swindon Wildcats 0 Basingstoke Bison 3

Swindon Wildcats were dealt a cruel blow on Boxing Day - three to be precise - as they were defeated 3-0 by high-flying Basingstoke Bison. Total Sport's Ben Callaghan was at the Swindon Ice Arena to recount the action.

After a lengthy Christmas break the Cats returned to home ice to take on high flying Basingstoke Bison.

Swindon were still missing Canadian forward Carlo Finucci through a knee injury he picked up at the start of the month. The Cats were boosted by the return of the six players who had won bronze with Team GB in France.

With both teams still feeling the effects of their Christmas dinners the opening period was a very scrappy contest. Neither side could break the deadlock despite the Bison out shooting Swindon 11-8.

Bison took the lead in the second period when Rene Jarolin pounced on the rebound to fire the puck into the roof of the net at 28:53. The game didn't become any less scrappy after the Bison took the lead and they finished the period a goal up, with Swindon leaving it all to do in the last period.

Basingstoke sealed the victory thanks to two further goals in the last period. Firstly at 47.03 Ciaran Long scored a shorthanded goal on the breakaway before Rene Jarolin added his second goal of the night at 50.24, following a goalmouth scramble.

Swindon continued in vain to try and get on the scoresheet with player-coach Aaron Nell coming closest after his shot it the far post. Jon Baston in the Bison net stood strong and completed the shut-out as Basingstoke ran out 3-0 victors in front of a packed Link Centre crowd.

Swindon now focus on another home game on Monday where they take on Lukas Smital and the Bracknell Bees.
