Buzzer Report: Swindon Wildcats 3 Telford Tigers 0
Total Sport’s Ben Callaghan was rink side as Swindon Wildcats erased ghosts of last Sunday to gain revenge upon Telford Tigers, beating them 3-0 at the Swindon Ice Arena.
Stevie Lyle inspired his troops to a stunning 3-0 win over Telford Tigers on Saturday evening, overcoming opposition who had only last weekend put his side to the sword.
The tight contest from last Sunday in Shropshire seemed to continue in the opening period in SN5 on Saturday.
Telford started quickly but Swindon regrouped and created chances of their own, Tomasz Malasinski probably having the best of the period.
Chances were falling early on at both ends of the ice with netminders Stevie Lyle and Sam Gospel both being relied upon in the opening minutes.
Despite being out-shot 15-6 in the second period, it would be the Cats who took the lead.
Carlo Finucci pounced on a loose puck to fire into the roof of Gospels net. Sami Ryhänen getting the sole assist.
Telford continued to force Lyle into back to back saves with Jason Silverthorn and Blahoslav Novak both going close.
With Telford rattled and the second period coming to a close, the Tigers took their timeout to regroup but Swindon held on until the end of the second period with the 1-0 lead.
The game turned noticeably physical in the final period with penalties being called on both sides, but Telford were unable to capitalise and found themselves further behind the 8 ball.
A defensive mistake from Joe Graham saw Swindon score a short-handed goal at 50:12, Tomasz Malasinski giving the Wildcats some breathing space from their Telford opposition.
Telford continued to battle hard and had chance after chance denied as Stevie Lyle turned away all 48 shots he faced on the night.
As the clock ticked down, the victory edged closer.
In the dying minutes Tomasz Malasinski converted his second of the night, with the puck rolling down the back of Sam Gospel and trickling over the line to seal a 3-0 victory for Lyle’s men.
Swindon travel to Deeside on Sunday to take on Tony Hand’s Manchester Phoenix in search of another win and the as-of-yet eluding four point weekend.
