Swindon Town rock-bottom of the Football League after hapless defeat at Colchester
Swindon Town hit the bottom of the Football League for the first time in their history, after a dismal first-half saw them slip to a 4-0 defeat at Colchester United.
Ian Holloway’s men were blown away by the U’s at Colchester Community Stadium, having been hit for four inside just 38 minutes.
The loss left Town bottom of the League Two after Morecambe picked up a point at Tranmere.
Town fell behind after just nine minutes in Essex, having once again conceded from a set-piece.
A corner to the back post was met by Samson Tovide, whose headed effort deflected in off Harry Smith for an own goal.
A hapless error then ensured the hosts doubled their advantage three minutes later. After losing the ball in a dangerous area, Jack Payne set the ball back for Tovide to strike into the top corner.
Tovide was not done there however, having capped off a slick counter-attack for Colchester to make it 3-0 on 26 minutes.
The striker also played a role in the fourth for the U’s, having won the ball and rolled in Payne to slot home and put the contest beyond doubt.
The defeat left Holloway’s side with just 13 points from 18 games. The Robins host Fleetwood Town at the Nigel Eady County Ground on Saturday (3pm).
