Thomas, 23, leaves Swindon just one year into a three-year contract he signed last summer after he joined on a free transfer from Coventry City.
The midfielder scored one goal in 35 appearances for the Robins: a 90th-minute goal against Millwall that, at the time, looked like it could be crucial in Town's fight against relegation.
Swindon did go down though and Thomas impressed in pre-season as the club prepared for life in League Two, but after just three league games, Thomas is saying farewell for a spell in India.
Atletico de Kolkata won the inaugral season of the Indian Super League, last season, and are currently managed by ex-Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham, who was interviewed for the Town job this summer, before they appointed David Flitcroft.
As well as Thomas, they have former Tottenham striker and Republic of Ireland international Robbie Keane on their books.
In a tweet, Thomas wrote: It's time for a new experience ... All the best to the boys for the rest of the season go and get promoted!"
He then followed that up with: "Delighted to have signed for @atletidekolkata Its a great opportunity! Cannot wait to get started and play in front of the ATK fans."
Swindon and Thomas mutually agreed to cancel Thomas' contract at the club so the move could go through, which means Town have not and will not recieve a fee from Atletico de Kolkata.
