Swindon were heading for a 0-0 draw on Saturday in what was a largely uneventful game, until Thomas popped up with what could be one of the season's most crucial goals in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
It was first goal in Town colours and also his first for anyone in five years.
Since signing for Swindon in the summer on a three-year deal, centre midfielder Thomas has also been deployed at centre back, right-back and, at the weekend, on either wing as Ben Gladwin was injured in the warm-up and had to be replaced by the ex-Coventry man prior to kick-off.
"I found out (I was playing) just after I was going in from the warm-up to maybe five minutes before (kick-off)," Thomas said.
"Mentally I just prepared as normal. I didn't do anything differently (Friday) night, I haven't done anything different all week to if I was (planned to be) playing so I was fairly relaxed and more pleased to be playing."
After securing the three points, Thomas is now fully-focused on next Saturday's match at Fleetwood in the latest leg of Swindon's relegation fight.
"It keeps us fighting and that's all we can do. We've got to concentrate on ourselves and win as many games as possible. I know it's difficult but it gives us hope to fight on for another week.
"We know we haven't achieved anything today, there's still a lot of football to be played and, as I said earlier, we just need to pick up as many wins as we can and concentrate on ourselves. This gives us a chance to kick on next week now.
"At this stage of the season the most important thing is three points no matter how or when you get them.
"It's difficult. No-one wants to be in the position we're in and I think we need to fight day, day out, fight for our families, fight for the fans and it's as simple as that."
