Darcy Ward: I Know This Is Probably Forever

Speedway star Darcy Ward has again commented upon his injuries following his August crash, admitting his current inability to walk may well be 'forever'.

Ward, who was a driving force behind a resurgent Swindon Robins during the previous campaign, was involved in a high speed collision in August while guesting for Polish outfit Zielona Gora.

The 23-year-old has been confined to a wheelchair ever since, though has been determined to maintain belief in a full recovery.

Speaking to the BBC, Ward said: "I know that this is probably it forever. But I also know that miracles can happen in medicine in this day and age."

Ward, who was on loan to the Robins from Elite League rivals Poole Pirates, admits he remembers the clash vividly, both before and after the moment of impact.

"I remember being in the pits before," he said. "I hadn't had the best meeting up to that stage and I wanted to go out in the final race and win.

"I remember tumbling over, it was all quite fast. I was lying there on the floor waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

"I couldn't feel anything, but I knew I'd broken my arm.

"Then I remember going to the hospital and that was it before I woke up after an operation," Ward recounted.

Since the event, the outpour of support has been overwhelming, with the entire speedway community and the wider world of sport rallying behind Ward and raising money for his foundation.

Messages of support have ranged from the Polish national football team to formula one driver Mark Webber, who visited Ward in the hospital during the early stages of recovery.

Relfecting upon his speedway endeavours, Ward said: "It's been a good up and down career, but I wouldn't change anything for the world"

Ward has also admitted it is his full intention to remain in speedway in some capacity.

Set to move back to Queensland, Ward will be joined by his partner Lizzie, who has been by his side throughout the recooperation period.

Ward told the BBC: ""It's pretty crazy, but she tells me she doesn't care about the wheelchair," he added. "She still sees me as Darcy and still sees me as very much the same. We're stronger than ever and she's a superstar in my eyes."
