Swindon Speedway known as Swindon Robins
Abbey Stadium, Lady Lane, Blunsdon, Swindon, Wiltshire,
0700 392 1235Twelve meetings rode, eight wins and four losses, has seen the Robins rocket themselves to the top of British speedway’s most prestigious league. And after maintaining their position since almost the start of the season, the pressure is building on Alun Rossiter’s reigning champions to retain their league title.
Last season they were underdogs, with many pundits and fans alike expecting the Wiltshire outfit to fail to even make the playoffs.
However after securing their champions status in dramatic fashion at Wolverhampton last season, the pressure was on Swindon as they headed in to the start of the year with a target on their backs as title favourites. However, this isn’t unfamiliar territory for the Robins.
After securing their first Elite League trophy in 2012, many expected Swindon to continue their dominance with a strong side including the likes of Peter Kildemand, and Hans Andersen, and they came extremely close after losing to Poole in the playoffs. But with a chance to create club history once again, the Robins will be hoping to put their past behind them.
Currently occupying top spot in the league on twenty-six points means it looks certain that the Swindon Robins will make this seasons playoffs, and with an unbeaten home record this year, the Abbey Stadium is certainly becoming a fortress for the home side.
Six home meetings and six wins highlights how important a good home record is to success, and this will be crucial to maintain should the Robins hope to become two-time Premiership champions. A strong away form also makes for good reading with two away wins to their name, including a bonus point victory over Poole.
Speedway is a physical sport that is incredibly demanding, but the mental pressures of the game are often undocumented. Swindon have the ability to walk their way into to this years grand final, but whether the team has the mental toughness to do so is another question altogether.
They have been fantastic this season, defying all their critics to show that the Swindon Robins truly are a force to be reckoned with. The season is quickly progressing and one thing for sure is that this will certainly be a close race to the finish line.
