Doyle Delighted As Swindon Become Cup Champions

JASON DOYLE praised the efforts of the entire Swindon team as the club captain guided the Swindon Robins to Premiership Supporters Cup glory against the Belle Vue Aces last night. Total Sport Swindon’s Ryan Walker spoke to Doyle following the grand final trophy triumph.

Having to overcome an eight-point deficit from the first-leg, the Swindon Robins produced a stunning comeback to win the club’s first-ever top-flight cup victory. Speaking after the meeting, Doyle explained how the Belle Vue Aces pushed Swindon all the way as the Wiltshire outfit eventually lifted the cup.

“It was always going to be a tough one against Belle Vue,” said Doyle.

“We knew it was going to be a very close meeting in the end and they pushed us all the way.

“We were lucky to have gates two and four in the last couple of heats and it was a great team effort.

“It wasn’t just one rider scoring all the points and it was great to finally get a trophy for Swindon this year,” he said.

Losing the first-leg in Manchester meant Swindon had to come from behind if they were going to lift the cup in front of a packed Abbey Stadium. But former World Champion Doyle insists the team always believed they would run out eventual champions.

“Yeh we’ve got a team full of riders who knew they’re capable of winning against anyone,” stated Doyle.

“It’s nice to always have that bit of confidence going into a home match.

“Hopefully we can do that as we head into the playoffs,” he said.

Premiership Supporters Cup victory means the Swindon Robins could now finish the season as cup and league champions.

And as the playoffs edge nearer, with Swindon facing the Wolverhampton Wolves in the semi-final, Doyle explained how the Robins are ready for the challenge as they attempt to lift the league title.

“That’s exactly it [tonight being a good warmup for the playoffs],” said Doyle.

“It’s going to be tough in the playoffs but to get a trophy for Swindon makes it a great end to the year.

“It’s very good for the Russell’s and all the promotion team at Swindon to get a trophy,” he said.

“I really don’t care who we ride [in the playoffs].

“We race against everyone and just see how it goes,” added Doyle.
