Godfrey Returns for the Wildcats for 2018/19
Swindon Wildcats are pleased to confirm the next returnee ahead of the new season with the confirmation that Sam Godfrey will be back on the blue-line for the upcoming campaign.
The 24-year-old defenceman re-joined the Wildcats from the Guildford Flames back in November and instantly became a reliable defenceman for the Cats going on to ice in games, helping us to the Cup Double. Speaking about his new deal Sam said:
“I’m really happy to be back in Swindon for another year. I’ve spoken to Aaron a couple of times this summer and it was a very easy decision to re-sign with the Wildcats. It was good fun to be winning trophies with these boys last year. Swindon are a team that should be winning so, whilst it was good to achieve that twice last year, we have to keep pushing forward this coming season”.
Having contributed to 19 assists and a further 2 goals, Sam formed a formidable defensive pairing with fellow Ex-Flame Neil Liddiard, who’ll also be returning to Swindon next year.
“It’ll be good to be playing with friends again, I’ve known Neil for a long time through my days first in Guildford and now Swindon, I’m looking forward to playing alongside him again next year. A lot of the boys know each other and we all gelled so well. Fingers crossed we can continue what we started”.
Sam, who started his career with the Swindon Wildcats Academy, also spoke of his pride of winning trophies with the club where it all started for him.
“It was huge to win something with my home-town club, it’s been a while since Swindon won some silverware and it felt amazing to be part of the team who met that goal considering I grew up in Swindon and played my junior hockey here”.
Likewise, Head Coach Aaron Nell was equally as delighted to have secured the services of Sam for another season.
“I’m delighted that Sam has decided to stay in Swindon for another season. He’s developed a lot since he was here first time around and I think we all saw a different Sam last year. He came in midway through the season, which is always tricky, but he settled in well and was solid for us right from his debut.
He’s a great guy to have around the locker-room and he fits in well here. It’s easy to forget he’s still only 24 and still has plenty of hockey ahead of him. We’re pleased he’s decided to remain with the Wildcats.”
