0700 392 1235Having raced in the Speedway GP series since its birth in 1995, Greg Hancock has become a legend of the sport for multiple reasons. But even after racing in every British GP in Cardiff, the American admits the event still surprises him each and every year.
“Cardiff is special for so many reasons,” said Hancock.
“Everybody knows that the event speaks for itself.
“To come here and ride in front of 40,000 plus fans is something special,” he added.
“I’ve got many fans here from the past but also including the present and I’m fortunate to have so many fans cheering me on,” he said.
And with the British SGP still regarded as the biggest event on the series, Hancock says attending the event is something every speedway fan has to do at least once in a lifetime.
“The Cardiff GP is a massive event, it takes over the City and things get pretty crazy,” Hancock said.
“I love to spend practice day walking around the City in the morning and relaxing without having to stop for too many photos.
“The build up to Saturday is an amazing event and is something everyone wants to see,” he said.
“Every speedway fan wants to get here at least once in a lifetime.
“You have to see it to believe it and I encourage everyone to come here,” he added.
At the age of 48, Hancock is the oldest rider on the Grand Prix series. And currently sitting in fifth place of the World Championships, he spoke of his desire to win a fifth British GP title.
“I don’t come here to take second and I want to win,” said Hancock.
“It’s not getting easier and the youngsters are so good now.
“You have to be smart in order to beat them and so much of my focus is now on perfecting my equipment,” he added.
“Points is what it’s all about.”
“Whether you win the GP or don’t, you want to score as many points as possible,” he said.
“Winning the event would be great but I’m focused on scoring well and seeing what happens,” added Hancock.
And when asked on the possibility of retirement, Hancock said he is unsure as to whether this will be his last year of racing before retirement.
“There’s not a question of wanting to retire because someday I will,” stated Hancock.
“You never know what will be my last Grand Prix, you just take every GP as it comes,” he said.
