How to choose the right Callaway golf ball for you

Whether you want maximum distance, ultimate spin and control, the softest feel, or a ball that helps you hole more putts… Callaway have a golf ball you’ll love to play.

Callaway make some of the best golf balls 2023 and are the ball of choice for the world’s number one golfer, Jon Rahm, but which of Callaway’s nine-strong golf ball line-up is best for you?

Best Callaway golf ball for good players wanting maximum control: Callaway Chrome Soft X

The Callaway Chrome Soft X is the ball used by Jon Rahm, as well as Siwoo Kim, Sam Burns, Phil Mickelson, and many other elite players. It’s the highest-spinning of Callaway’s tour-level golf balls, meaning the most control on approach shots. You do need a relatively fast swing speed (105mph+ with driver) to get the most of it, though.

Best Callaway golf ball for a softer feel: Callaway Chrome Soft

The standard (non-X) version of the Callaway Chrome Soft has a softer compression than most tour golf balls, making it ideal for golfers who want a very soft feel and those with moderate swing speeds.

Softer compression can sometimes mean slightly reduced distances with the driver, particularly at high swing speeds, so big hitters may prefer the Chrome Soft X or Chrome Soft X LS.

Best Callaway golf ball for maximum distance: Callaway Chrome Soft X LS

The ‘LS’ stands for “low spin”, which is what high speed players need to maximise driving distance. The difference is likely to be small, but you can expect slightly longer drives, with the trade-off being marginally less stopping power on approach shots. If you typically play courses with soft, receptive greens, where you don’t need the extra spin to help stop your approach shots, the Chrome Soft X LS might be the perfect option.

Like the Chrome Soft X, you need plenty of speed to get the full benefit of the Chrome Soft X LS.

Best premium Callaway ball for budget-conscious golfers: Callaway ERC Soft

The ERC Soft delivers the classic combination of distance and spin with a soft feel but at a slightly lower price point than most premium balls, including Callaway’s Chrome Soft range.

The ERC Soft is available with some fantastic alignment aids like Callaway’s Triple Track and 360 Fade (more on those in a minute), which will be great for those who want extra help aiming putts but not for those who prefer a clean and simple look.

Best Callaway golf ball for slow swing speeds: Callaway Supersoft

The Supersoft has a very low compression, making it ideal for golfers with slow swing speeds who struggle to get the most of balls aimed at tour pros and other elite players.

As you’d expect, it offers a very soft feel, and for the price the distance, spin and durability are very impressive.

There’s also the Supersoft Max, which is slightly larger than standard golf balls but still conforms with the rules of golf. The larger size is designed to increase confidence and make it easier to hit.

Best Callaway golf ball for ladies: Callaway REVA

The REVA is effectively the same golf ball as the Supersoft Max, just with different colour choices and alignment graphics.

The slightly larger than standard ball is designed to inspire confidence and be easier to hit, particularly for ladies who tend to hit more woods and hybrids than men.

Best Callaway golf balls for putting alignment: Callaway Triple Track / TruVis / 360 Fade

Callaway have pioneered clever patterns and designs more than any other company. The TruVis features hexagonal patterns a bit like a traditional football, which make the ball look larger than it is and help you see how it spins and rolls. Triple Track has helped countless golfers with their alignment when putting, particularly those who use a putter with matching alignment aids. The new 360 Fade technology, meanwhile, is designed to help you hit your start line on putts and give visible roll feedback on the putting green.

All three technologies are available across a variety of Callaway’s best golf balls and are designed to help you hole more putts, but they can also help with aiming tee shots.
