Jason Doyle up to third in World Championship standings

Swindon Robins star Jason Doyle stormed up to third in the World Championship standings with a strong showing in the British Grand Prix on Saturday night.

The M&S Van Rental Robins skipper bagged an excellent 12-point haul with an impressive display at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Doyle, who won his first ever Grand Prix in Prague a fortnight earlier, notched three race wins to comfortably reach the semi-finals before just missing out after a fierce battle with Bartosz Zmarzlik.

It was still enough to move the 30-year-old into third position behind leader Greg Hancock and reigning World Champion Tai Woffinden.

He admits he is delighted with his position heading into the World Cup break before the next round in the flagship series in Malilla, Sweden on August 13.

However, he was left hugely frustrated after missing out on a Grand Final appearance in controversial circumstances.

“Looking at the bigger picture, it was a good night to get 12 points but to not make the final was a bit of a hard one to swallow," said Doyle.

“I felt fast all night and the team worked really well, but it just didn’t work out for me in the semi-final.

“I think Zmarzlik should have been excluded for dangerous riding to be honest, because you don’t square a corner off like that and try to run someone into the fence to get past them.

“If he passed me cleanly I would have taken it, but to ride like that, I think things need to be done.

“Gate one was prime and that rut was what I thought was going to get me into the final. I made a really good start first time around and it got called back, I couldn’t believe it.

“You see the replay and there wasn’t one roll, I just let the clutch go at the right time. I think the referee needs some glasses because those two really bad decisions put a massive downer on my Grand Prix.

“Being third in the world at the moment is a great feeling, but there are still another six Grand Prix’s to go and it’s going to be a tough road ahead.

“I’ve had some good Grand Prix’s in the last couple of weeks, but I know things can go badly quite quickly at this level.

“There are a lot of positives at the moment, so hopefully I can keep scoring lots of points and stay up there until the end.”

Doyle will be back in Swindon colours when they return from an 11-day break at Wolverhampton next Monday, July 18, race beginning at 7.30pm.

They will then face a busy week with trips to King’s Lynn and Lakeside on Wednesday and Friday respectively, sandwiching a huge home encounter with fellow high-flyers Belle Vue at the Abbey on Thursday, July 21 (7.30).
