Kennedy thanks Swindon Town fans for helping them to victory at Cheltenham

Head coach Mark Kennedy praised Swindon Town’s fans for helping his team get over the line after a 3-2 victory at Cheltenham Town.

Goals from George Cox, Will Wright and Joel McGregor put Town into a commanding position at Whaddon Road before former Swindon Town boss Michael Flynn’s side rallied.

George Miller and Ethon Archer struck for the hosts to set up a grandstand finale with 12 minutes remaining.

But Town held firm to record their first away victory under Kennedy, who was keen to hail the fans for their support throughout.

Asked about enjoying the victory with the travelling support, the Dubliner told BBC Radio Wiltshire: “That was quite touching for me and for all the players as well. That was a real moment.

“I am so, so pleased for everybody. The players, the staff, particularly the fans because as a head coach we’re in the background saying ‘we have taken points in seven games and that’s magnificent achievement’.

“Unfortunately we have only won two. People want to see wins, so I was so pleased that our fans got a win and the players get to share it with them and connect.

“Because it’s quite a small ground, I thought there was quite an emotional attachment, a real intimate connection. It was phenomenal.

“Sometimes in football you don’t always see it, you get criticisms and rightly so. But today was a great example of how connected we are as a club, in terms of our fans and our team.

“That was something I’ll never forget and our players talked about in the dressing room. I know it’s something I’ll never forget and a huge, huge thank you because they got us over the line.”

Swindon are now 18th in League Two, with 11 points from as many games.

Kennedy’s side are back in action at home against Doncaster Rovers at the Nigel Eady County Ground next Saturday (3pm).
