Kennedy believes Swindon Town played well 'in patches' in victory over Southampton

Swindon Town head coach Mark Kennedy insisted his team played well “in patches” as they got the better of Southampton’s under-21s with a 2-1 win in a behind closed doors friendly at Staplewood.

Paul Glatzel netted once again in pre-season for the Robins with Aaron Drinan converting a winner for the visitors six minutes from time.

Reacting to the victory, boss Kennedy told the club website: “You could see the heat, it was red hot but I thought the lads were excellent.

“A great workout physically and I thought we played really well in patches.

“As a coaching staff, you look at four-corner models. I thought it ticked a lot of boxes.”

He added: “In certain spells I thought we were very naïve, in other spells we were very, very good. It’s recognising what a League Two game may look like.

“We were 2-1 up with three minutes left and we are trying to clip balls into midfield from a goal kick, when we’ve got a six-foot five striker up front who dominates aerially and is very good with his back to goal. It’s tiny things like that.

“Next week is a big week for us, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Town followed up Friday’s triumph with a 4-2 victory at Highworth Town a day later.

Liam Hutt, Dani Gonzalez, Joe Owiti and Conor Britchford-Stanley all found the target for a youthful Robins outfit.

Swindon visit Eastleigh in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, July 28 (2pm kick-off).
