Luke Williams believes the EFL Trophy is "great for English football"
Swindon Town manager Luke Williams thinks the EFL Trophy is great for the future of the England team, despite the controversial nature of the competition.
The EFL Trophy has attracted critisism for allowing Premier League and high-profile Championship clubs to enter an Under 23 side into the competition as many fans feel the trophy will act as a gateway for B teams to be included in the Football League.
An attendance of 1,981 turned up to the County Ground to watch Swindon beat one of these U23 sides, Chelsea, 2-1 on Tuesday night, and following the game Town boss Williams gave his two cents on the EFL Trophy.
"I think it is great for football in this country, I know there has been lots of different opinions on this tournament but it is great for football that these young boys get a chance to play against league teams and against experienced players in a competition that matters.
"I think it is a great experience for them.
"I completely understand the difficulties in finding the finances to keep coming to football and, not only that, but for some this competition is not something that is important enough to bring them out for a game in midweek and we are very grateful."
