Throughout this season, which has recently seen Swindon drop into the bottom four of League One, Williams has regularly been ruing the mental capability, or lack thereof, of his young team but it was a different story in midweek as the Robins brilliantly recovered from a goal down against the Gills.
It was only the second time Swindon have won a match this season after going a goal down, with a 2-1 win at Bolton earlier on in 2017 being the other one.
Along with that, it was Town's first home win of the calendar year.
At full-time, Williams stated "the belief" was one of the best aspects of the victory.
"We've all seen the group struggle to deal with a setback. There was a time in the season where we hadn't won when we'd been behind, we never managed to claw back and we changed that convincingly tonight.
"It feels more like last season when we were capable of winning from behind and we were able to score goals early, score goals in the last minute, it feels more like that and we feel like a threat all the time.
"They were 1-0 down at half-time, there's doubt there and you have to try to convince them that if the performace is good and you can be sane in mind to recognise that.
"I tried to convice them and I told them that I believed if we maintained the intensity, if we maintained the attacking edge to our game that we would score two or three and hopefully it will help the players to believe even more in the message that I'm telling them.
"They need to keep going to show us, to convince us it's not lucky, it's real, they need to show us that.
"I think boys like Brandon (Ormonde-Ottewill) has been guilty sometimes of going within his shell and not showing the qualities he's got but he looked like he's still going at the end of the game, making tackles, marking in the box, trying to jump for headers, trying to burst forward at every opportunity.
"If people can step up like that we've got a realistic chance."
