MATCH PREVIEW: Swindon Town v Scunthorpe United

SWINDON TOWN host Scunthorpe United this afternoon as Richie Wellens' side look to extend their lead at the top of League Two. Total Sport Swindon's Rajan Hothi previews the SN1 clash.

A crucial mid-week victory over promotion contenders Northampton Town saw Swindon record a 1-0 win over the Cobblers, courtesy of a late Jordan Lyden goal that ensured Swindon maintained their stay at the summit of League Two.

Late goals from Crewe and Plymouth saw the pair keep the pressure on Swindon, but with the two set to face each other today, it gives Town the perfect chance to capitalise on some dropped points against a Scunthorpe side that have struggled to find form.

Since relegation from League One last year, Scunthorpe have failed to put together a promotion push and instead find themselves languishing in 18th spot in the division - having recently parted ways with manager Paul Hurst.

Just one win in their last eight has seen Scunthorpe slump down the table, and after the appointment of Russ Wilcox as manager until the end of the season, the Iron faithful have been left far from pleased with their first season back in League Two.

While Scunthorpe have struggled for results, they have some individual players which make it easy to see why some tipped them for promotion at the start of the season.

Kevin van Veen is a deadly striker at this level, and the 28-year-old has bagged ten goals in the league so far this campaign.

The Dutchman has a very good record against Town, notching two goals and three assists in the four games he's featured against Swindon.

Swindon will be seeking to do the double over Scunthorpe for the first time since the 1966-67 season, after running out 2-0 winners in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season.

One of that days goalscorers, Keshi Anderson, will be ruled out for the clash as he recovers from yet another injury that has kept the talented playmaker out of action.

Swindon have had no luck with injuries in the past couple of months, and Paul Caddis is the latest player to suffer a knock as he was forced off with an injury in the win at Northampton.

Mathieu Baudry will also not feature against Scunthorpe with the Frenchman also suffering from injury.

Previewing the game, Total Sport Swindon spoke to Richie Wellens who highlighted just how much potential Swindon have as a club and despite links to Blackpool, the current Town gaffer is not going anywhere.

"I've had no contact from Blackpool (regarding management vacancy.) The only contact I've had is a 50% off voucher at Pleasure Beach," revealed Wellens.

"This club should be trying to get into the Championship and competing to do that. We are a big enough club and have the fanbase to do that.

"I'm not looking to leave this club. I have enjoyed my time at this club and we are nowhere near finished.

"Let's keep going as we are and keep progressing on the pitch," he added.
