Website 0330 002 1993Richie Wellens promised a fast start against Morecambe, and his Swindon Town players certainly made good on their managers promise as Theo Robinson put the hosts ahead after just ten minutes of play. End-to-end football early on saw both teams go close to scoring, as a Town corner in the 10th minute led to the games opening goal.
Retrieving the ball after initially losing it from an easily read corner move, Kyle Bennett chipped in a cross that fell to Rose, as the midfielder passed it to Conroy only for the Captain’s shot to be deflected high into the path of Robinson who was left with a simple header from close range to score his third goal for the club.
Having scored early on, Swindon continued to attack as Jim Bentley’s Morecambe appeared defensively shaken as Town looked to have doubled their lead just minutes. later only for Anderson’s goal-bound effort to be palmed away excellently by Mark Halstead.
Town seemed to threaten on every occasion that they had the ball, however, Morecambe were given a golden opportunity to get back level in the 18th minute.
Dispossessing Rose 30-yards from goal, Aaron Collins was through one-on-one with McCormick but for the Swindon shot-stopper to spread himself well and make a crucial save to retain Swindon’s lead.
Wary of letting Morecambe back into the game, Swindon once again increased the tempo as the visitors sat deep looking to play on the counter-attack. Moving the ball around well continued to create openings as Swindon remained on the front-foot but unable to increase their advantage.
Town’s attackers ran riot against the unorganised Morecambe backline and a 3-on-2 counter-attack in the 35th minute counter-attack had Swindon bearing down on goal only for referee Nick Kinseley to pull play back to an earlier foul on Bennett to the displeasure of the home crowd as Alex Kenyon was shown yellow for his rash challenge.
Half-time crept ever closer but Swindon continued to create chances as Kaiyne Woolery’s low driven shot from the edge of Morecambe’s box found its way past Halstead to make it two-nil Swindon with just minutes remaining of the first-half.
An acrobatic save from McCormick in the immediate aftermath of Swindon’s second goal kept Town’s lead intact as the half-time whistle blew just moments later with the home side firmly in control.
After a disastrous first-half performance, Morecambe attempted to get back into the game from the off as long-range efforts from Mingola and Kenyon were sent high over the bar of the untroubled McCormick.
In contrast, Swindon were consistent in producing high-quality attacks with Rose, Bennett, and Carroll easily getting the better of their opposite numbers adding to the fantastic long-range balls of Conroy to continuously feed balls into Town’s attackers.
For large parts, Swindon were excellent in every area of the game as the STFC players produced one of their finest displays under Richie Wellens as Conroy scored Swindon’s third in the 65th minute to seal three points and earn Town their first win in four games.
A through ball from Anderson was picked up just inside the box by Conroy who outmuscled Morecambe’s Bennet before turning the Oates inside out and firing his shot past Halstead as the defender produced a fantastic goal.
Morecambe arrived at the County Ground high on confidence after recent victories but would leave despondent and a step closer to relegation as Swindon produced their best performance of the season.
Kyle Bennett made it four-nil with a weak shot that trickled past Halstead in the 85th minute as Swindon bounced back to winning ways. STFC fans gave the Town players a standing ovation as they left the pitch, but it remains a question of what could’ve been this season if Town had replicated this performance when it mattered most.
