Website 0330 002 1993Full-time: Swindon 0 Westbury 3
Westbury United are champions of Wiltshire for the first time.
90- Toby Cole comes inside and tries a speculative effort which goes well wide of Copland's goal. 0-3.
90- There will be three minutes of added time. 0-3.
84- OFF: Hutt, Hubbard
ON: Milne, Wynn-Davis
82- Hubbard is again the one causing problems. McGregor was fouled from behind as he looked to drive forwards, but the ball came to the little number 7 anyway, Hubbard came inside and had a shot that was once again blocked. 0-3.
77- OFF: Shanley, Cockerill; Fox
ON: Griffiths, Biddiscombe; Adams
76- Goal saving challenge from Stewart. Westbury did countered quickly as Higdon sent Stradling through on goal, but Stewart didn't give up and charged back to get the ball to safety as he looked to shoot. 0-3.
70- Higdon goes close. Westbury break quickly down the right and the ball was delivered into the middle where Higdon tried an audacious backheel finish, which was blocked and the ball went just wide of the post. 0-3.
57- Hubbard is really ticking now. He runs diagonally across the field, chops inside and tries to curl one into the far corner, but Hill makes the save. 0-3.
66- Hubbard takes a free-kick from a few yards outside the area and lifts it just over the top of the bar. 0-3.
62- OFF: Flippance
ON: Cole
61- Since Gonzalez has come on, he and Hubbard have really stepped Swindon up a notch. The two of them have combined very well a few times and Westbury are starting to struggle a bit at the back. 0-3.
60- Swindon starting to pen Westbury in. Hubbard is starting to come to life and just had his shot from outside the box blocked. 0-3.
57- Swindon's best chance so far. Gonzalez makes a good run in behind, receives the ball and turns. He found Hubbard in space, but his effort lacked conviction and span wide. 0-3.
55- OFF: Cowmeadow, Hamilton; Bole
ON: Alston, Gonzalez; Adepitan
54- Swindon building back into the game a little as McGregor and Hutt combine down the right and Hutt plays a good ball in, but no one can get on the end of it. 0-3.
48- Hulbert steps up and went the way Copland was saying he would go, but the 'keeper dived the other way and that is more than likely that. 0-3.
Goal. Swindon 0 Westbury 3 (Hulbert 48' PEN)
48- A rash challenge from Hamilton in the area and Westbury could be out of sight. 0-2.
48- Penalty to Westbury. 0-2.
46- A goal disallowed almost straight away for Westbury. Copland was at full stretch to keep out an effort from Walton and Stradling looked to follow up, but was in an offside position. 0-2.
46- Westbury get us back underway for the second half of the WPS final. 0-2.
The players are back out for the second half.
That was probably what you would expect from this game. Swindon have looked tidy in possession and have shown flashes of quality, but the superior physicality of Westbury has seen them punish Town when they have come forwards.
Half-time: Swindon 0 Westbury 2
45- A Westbury corner causes all sorts of trouble as it ricochets around the box before Copland can paw it clear. 0-2.
45- There will be two minutes added on. 0-2.
44- Cowmeadow bursts down the side of the box and looks to deliver into the middle, but Hill gets up high to make the catch. 0-2.
43- Hill nearly caught out. Hart hooks a long ball forward that appears aimless but bounces high off the turf and almost dips under the bar and Hill had to tip it over. 0-2.
40- Brown spreads the ball wide to Hutt. He plays the ball on to McGregor, who battles well to keep possession and his shot is deflected behind for a corner. 0-2.
39- A long passing move from Swindon ends with Fox playing the ball into Hamilton on the edge of the box, he turns to try and find space, but pulls his shot just wide. 0-2.
37- Swindon are holding possession and have plenty of bodies ahead of the ball, but there is not enough movement and that is making it hard for them to get the ball into dangerous areas. 0-2.
36- Westbury go close again. Tombes looked to have cut out a ball inside, but he stretched too far to keep possession and Walton latched onto the loose ball and drove into the box, he looked to put the ball across goal and it was deflected into the side netting. 0-2.
33- Westbury have a free-kick on the edge of the box. Thankfully Bole is no Jake Cain and blazes it over and hits the Imagine Cruising advertising banner on the top of the Town End. 0-2.
30- Swindon let off the hook. A high ball was misjudged by Fin Tombes, allowing Stradling to run beyond him, but Hart managed to cover round and snuff out the danger. 0-2.
28- Strong play down the left gives Fox some space and he flashes a ball across the face of goal, but no one is on hand to get on the end of it. 0-2.
28- There is probably no more fitting way for the season to end than for Swindon to control possession but not create very much and then get beaten by a much bigger team. 0-2.
27- Copland looks like he is going to continue, but he is still feeling the back of his thigh. 0-2.
26- Copland has gone down injured off the ball and is now being treated. Giving Liam McCartan the chance to have a word with his players. 0-2.
23- Just as Swindon put a nice move together they are lynched on the counter. Higdon counters down the right, holding off his defender before cutting back to Strading, whose shot takes a huge deflection to take it beyond Copland. 0-2.
Goal. Swindon 0 Westbury 2 (Strading 22')
18- Westbury have looked to sit in since taking the lead and the tempo of Swindon's play isn't causing them many problems. This sounds very much like things I have typed about the first team. 0-1.
14- Crossbar. A free-kick from deep finds Hutchings in the middle. He heads the ball towards goal, but it comes back off the bar and the flag is raised before Flippance can get to the rebound. 0-1.
12- Nearly. Stewart drives down to the by-line on the right hand side and plays a low cross into the middle which just goes behind Cowmeadow and is scrambled clear. 0-1.
8- The first real chance that Westbury have had is well taken. The ball is cut back to the edge of the area where Ryan Bole hits it first time with the inside of his boot and into the bottom corner of the net. 0-1.
Goal. Swindon 0 Westbury 1 (Bole 8')
8- One Westbury fan tries to get a chant of "You've got school in the morning" going. As most here also have got Maths tomorrow at 9am, it doesn't catch on. 0-0.
6- Swindon probably should create more from that. Fox and McGregor combine well on the left and as Fox enters to the box, he can't quite find the space to get a shot off, the ball is eventually played towards the back post where Hubbard fails to get anything on it. 0-0.
5- The opening few minutes have been largely even. Both sides are trying to play some nice football, but neither have managed to fashion a real chance. 0-0.
3- Jaxon Brown will play for Swindon next season. The kid has it, you can tell.
Unless of course the supposed interest from Spurs prevents him from doing so. 0-0.
2- It is a rather raucous bunch who Westbury have brought with them on their coaches. Weying any Swindon errors. 0-0.
1- We are underway in the WPS final. 0-0.
Westbury have printed the match details onto their shirts and I love that level of commitment to this. They also have roughly 50 mascots.
Here come the teams.
The shield is placed in front of the tunnel here (so you know it is a proper cup final), it will be interesting to see if anyone does a Jermaine Pennant and touches it on their way out.
I am not totally sure where he is now, but I did see Mike Flynn wondering around earlier on, so I imagine he will be seeing if any of these young players are capable of being part of his squad for next season.
Swindon will be going for their first Wiltshire Premier Shield title since 2010 this evening. They were completely out of the competition until Richie Wellens brought them back into it in 2019, but Covid seasons and fielding a youth side last season have kept them from officially becoming champions of Wiltshire. Personally the biggest disappointment of the curtailed 2019/20 season was not getting the chance to do the league/cup double as Swindon had already made the final that year.
Based on the drills the players are doing in the warm-ups it looks like Swindon will be 433 with Brown at the base of the three-man midfield.
It is not a major surprise given he has been around the first team for two seasons, but George Cowmeadow is significantly bigger and more developed than the rest of the Swindon players. He, Redman Evans, and Jaxon Brown all look much more like footballers than the rest during warm-ups.
The other thing that has disappointed me is that Abu Kanu is not involved. I figured him a safe bet earlier today and so made him the header photo for this and now I have been made to look like a fool.
Having gone to great lengths to find out who the players are, I have now been given a team sheet with their full names on and it has killed me a little on the inside.
This is normally where I would try and figure out how Westbury are setting up, but that is not really possible for a team at their level, so we might have to do without. Main takeaway from the line-ups is that it is an all youth team side from Swindon, not even Minturn involved, which seemed like it was possible based on the club's poster. They are captained by the up-and-coming Jaxon Brown and have Cowmeadow, Hart, and Copland who have been involved at first team level.
Westbury United XI:
Hill, S.Hulbert, Bole, Cockerill, Price, Hutchings, Shanley, Strading, Flippance, Walton, Higdon
Subs: Cole, Griffiths, Baldy, R.Hulbert, Adepitan, Jordan, Biddiscombe
Swindon Town XI:
Copland, Hutt, Fox, Brown, Hart, Tombes, Hubbard, Stewart, Cowmeadow, Hamilton, McGregor
Subs: Evans, Adams, Milne, Alston, Wynn-Davis, Gonzalez
It is somewhat unclear what team Swindon will be fielding for this match, I have only seen the Westbury players so far. It will likely be made up heavily or entirely of youth team players, so Town actually come into this as underdogs. Last year Westbury knocked a youthful Swindon out of this competition 4-0, in a game mostly notable for being the one and only appearance of Manny Idem in red (or whatever colour goalkeeper shirt he was wearing). It would not really be a shock if that happens again, team sheets should be out shortly.
Good evening everyone. I am sat in the press box getting ready for the biggest game of the day. No I am not at the Bernabeu, I am in position for the final of the Wiltshire Premier Shield between Swindon and Westbury. Will Mike Flynn's reign begin with silverware?
