MORRIS FRUSTRATED AFTER MEETING ABANDONED

The Swindon Robins saw their opening meeting of the season against the Leicester Lions end in disaster after a first heat crash involving Captain Nick Morris saw proceedings quickly called to an end. TotalSport Swindon’s Ryan Walker was in the pits to get the thoughts of Morris following the abandonment.

Poor weather over the last few weeks has seen the start to the 2018 British Premiership speedway season being regularly delayed with meetings cancelled on a consistent basis. And following Thursday evening’s postponement, Swindon skipper Morris admits the meeting should’ve been called off earlier.

“ The meeting probably shouldn’t have gone ahead.” Began Morris.

“ When everyone wants to push on with the meeting because it’s not raining then it’s hard for us to say we don’t want to race.

“ The conditions weren’t good and we shouldn’t have raced.” He added.

“ It’s taken for someone to get hurt who probably won’t race in England again after that for us to call it off.

“ We tried to go and ride for the fans and unfortunately people have got hurt.” Said Morris.

Having had three meetings cancelled in the build up to Thursday evening, the Wiltshire outfit were clearly eager to put on a show for the attending fans, and Morris admits that pre-race inspections didn’t highlight the dangers the track posed.

“ Because it’s not raining it’s hard to say we don’t want to race.” Stated Morris.

“ We were worried about the fog and we forgot about the track a bit.

“ There was a lot of moisture in the air and the track was like ice.

“ I don’t think any of the riders expected that and we crashed on the third corner.” He stated.

Leicester’s Grand Prix star Martin Vaculik appeared to have suffered a broken ankle following the three-rider pile-up on the third bend, but thankfully for the Swindon Robins, Morris sustained no injuries in the accident.

“ I’m ok, my machinery is a bit banged up but thankfully I didn’t suffer any injury.” Explained Morris.

“ I made a good start away from the gate and didn’t have any problems in the first turn.

“ I then came down the straight like any other day and then went into the third corner that was like ice.

“ I think the rest of the boys did the exact same thing as well which wasn't good.” He added.
