Nicky Ajose describes Swindon Town's win over Fleetwood Town as "massive"
Striker Nicky Ajose believes Swindon Town's 1-0 win over Fleetwood could be a big win as the club kept hope alive of avoiding the drop to League Two.
Ajose, now in his third spell at Swindon, scored an 81st-minute winner at Highbury as he, for the second season in a row, is Town's main goalscoring option as they find themselves in a League One relegation battle.
The ex-Manchester United man came second in the League One Golden Boot table last season, scoring 24 goals to keep Swindon afloat, a year after he hit six in 16 during a previous loan spell.
He departed for Charlton in the summer but has found himself back at Swindon, again on loan, and back in the goals as, following Saturday, he has six in 11. The reason Swindon and Ajose work so well is all down to head coach Luke Williams, according to Ajose.
"He knows me inside out, he trusts me, I trust his judgement and I keep coming back for a reason."
The victory at promotion contenders Fleetwood did not change Swindon's pre-match position of 22nd, but as Gillingham and Shrewsbury both lost to MK Dons and Bristol Rovers respectively, Swindon are now just potentially one win away from escaping the bottom four.
Shrewsbury, in 21st, have a game in hand and Gillingham are three points ahead of Swindon but Town now have back-to-back home matches coming up - against MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon next Saturday and the following Friday.
Speaking shortly after the final whistle, Ajose labelled Saturday's win as "massive" for him, his teammates and the club's fans, mainly due to the fact that Town have thrown away leads in the past but held on this time out.
"It's massive," he said.
"Obviously we were in the same position at Bradford a few weeks ago and we managed to mess it up.
"Today we scored at a similar time and it was comfortable and we didn't really look like conceding so that's experience and shows the group's growing.
"We've got players who have got enough games under their belt to see it through but if that's what'll keep us up I'm fine with that."
Ajose is also of the opinion that the 323 travelling Swindon fans played a big part in the late goal that secured the crucial three points.
"It's a small stadium and (they) packed it out. The travelling fans are core members, they come home and away and to give them a result like that was perfect (ahead of) MK Dons next week.
"We don't want to be at this stage of the season having to play for something but if we stay up it's going to be a massive achievement and we would love to go to the County Ground and see eight or nine thousand, we don't want to see 6,000 et cetera."
