ON-THE-BUZZER MATCH REPORT: Swindon Wildcats 4-6 MK Lightning
The Swindon Wildcats' dreams of progressing in group B of the play-offs took a big dent on Wednesday night, as they were beaten 6-4 by the MK Lightning.
Swindon went 1-0 up which gave them early hope of pulling off a shock result against runaway group leaders the MK Lightning, but the visitors struck back in typical style to record a comfortable win over Aaron Nell's side.
Robin Kovar gave Swindon the lead at 9:51 after being assisted by Phil Hill and Max Birbraer but that was as good as it got for the Wildcats, as they were unable to build on their early success.
Leigh Jamieson drew the pre-match favourites level bang on 14 minutes though when he fired in the equaliser after being assisted by Lewis Hook and Antti Holli.
Jordan Cownie completed the turnaround at 27:48 when he tapped in from practically the goal line to give group B leads Lightning the lead.
Holli made it 3-1 to Milton Keynes at 33:35 when he seized on a poor pass out from the back before tapping in and, not long after, Cownie grabbed his second goal of the night to practically put the game out of sight before the end of the second period.
With just 1:23 to go in the second batch of 20 minutes, Cownie scored a tap-in for 4-1 to put the Lightning three goals to the good at the Link Centre as their 100 per cent record in the play-offs continued.
Tomasz Malasinski gave Swindon brief home, at 45:02, when he struck to make it 4-2 but the hosts were not able to pull off a miracle in Wiltshire.
In fact, it quickly got worse for Swindon when Blaz Emersic rifled in from range at 48:56 for 5-2.
Neil Liddiard got the telling touch during a goalmouth scramble to make it 5-3 in the closing stages, but it was too late for Swindon to get anything out of a game that they, in truth, never really looked like winning.
It was truly over as a contest at 58:52 when Emersic scored an empty-net goal, but there was somehow still time for Stevie Whitfield to score even later on, at 59:35, to at the very least restore a bit of pride for Swindon.
Salt was rubbed into the wounds of the Wildcats due to the other game in Group B, as the Basingstoke Bison earned a 4-2 win at the Hull Pirates.
That leaves Swindon four points behind second-placed Bison, with two matches to go.
