ON-THE-WHISTLE MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 0-1 Forest Green Rovers (EFL Trophy)

Christian Doidge's 80th-minute goal eliminated Swindon Town from the EFL Trophy in the second round for the second season running.

Doidge bundled in 10 minutes from time after his initial effort was saved by Lawrence Vigouroux but the ball squirmed under the Chilean and towards goal, leaving Doidge with the simple task of tucking in.

It means Swindon have exited two cup compeitions in successive matches following Saturday's 5-2 trouncing at Stevenage in the second round of the FA Cup.

In addition, it is Town's fourth defeat on the spin in all competitions.

Like many of Swindon's encounters at home under David Flitcorft, the first half passed without a great deal of exciting action to speak of.

Forest Green had the first real attempt at the goalkeeper with 11 minutes played but defender Alex Iacovitti could only flick Scott Laird's corner wide of the far post.

Luke Norris then tried an ambitious half volley on the turn but that was deflected out for a corner which game to nothing.

Swindon's best sighter should have seen the deadlock broken, however Keshi Anderson's close-range shot was well saved by Forest Green keeper Brad Collins after Ellis Iandolo's cross was headed into his path.

Norris had another go with a half volley when Olly Lancashire's ball up pitch came his way after two bounces, but the effort was deflected wide again and, again, nothing came of the corner.

Iacovitti summed the half up when another half volley, this time from the edge of the box, looped a long way wide.

Paul Mullin's attempt from range that flashed past the post got the second half off to a bright start, but that was not much better.

It got worse pretty quickly when top goalscorer Norris hobbled off after 52 minutes to be replaced by Kaiyne Woolery, who was on loan at Forest Green last season.

Woolery created a fair few openings for Swindon, but his finishing was off. His best opportunity came eight yars from goal but he could not keep his cool and he blazed over the top.

He also attempted to square the ball for Mullin on one occasion, but that low ball was well cut out by the Forest Green.

They also had the best shot all night, but Reece Brown's curler from the edge of the box was fantastically tipped out for a corner by Vigouroux.

Swindon edged the contest, but that counted for nothing when Doidge won the game with 80 played.

Town pushed for the leveller that would have meant penalties, but it was to no avail.

Anderson was shown his second yellow card in second-half stoppage time for dissent. Suspensions that happen in the EFL Trophy only count in the EFL Trophy though so Anderson is not ruled out for Accrington on Saturday.

Forest Green's Dale Bennett also got a second yellow in the 90th minute.
