ON-THE-WHISTLE MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 1-0 Northampton Town (FA Youth Cup)
Sol Pryce's 11th-minute header saw Swindon's under-18s progress to round three of the FA Youth Cup for the second season running.
For the second round running, Pryce opened the scoring early on when he beat Northampton goalkeeper Adam North to Wilf White's deep right-sided cross to head home for 1-0.
Visitors Northampton began the game on the front foot however, but Shama Bako could only turn a low left-winged cross wide of the far post, with barely a minute played.
Pryce broke the deadlock ten minutes later but the Cobblers attempted to level, however Jarvis Williams could only drive his long-range effort a fair distance over the bar just before the quarter-hour mark.
Northampton striker James Gillard had his first attempt on goal with 20 minutes gone, but like Bako earlier, all he could do with a left-sided ball was turn it past the post.
Swindon went back down the other end and should have doubled their lead, however Ralph Graham was unable to keep composed, as he side-footed a left-sided cutback by Elliot Dugan wide.
Graham did manage to warm the palms of North later on though when he nodded a White cross at him from a tight angle.
Morgan Roberts was the second to try his luck from range, but like Williams before him, had to settle for his shot going way over the bar.
Northampton did finally give Archie Matthews something genuine to deal with though when Gillard was put through in on goal, but, when one-on-one with the keeper, he was denied by Matthews who superbly pushed the ball away from danger seconds before the half-time whistle went.
The second half was a more drab affair, but Dean Whaler emerged as Northampton's main threat.
First, he produced a jinking run down the right but was let down by his shot that he struck wide from a tight angle and soon after he did manage to bundle the ball into the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside.
The hosts were not able to create much in the second period, but did come close late on when Ollie Rejek spanked a first-time shot from 25 yards just wide.
Pryce almost finished the contest in second-half stoppage time but his powerful shot almost broke the crossbar rather than the net and sub Teoman Atik saw his rebounded header cleared off the line.
Swindon Town will host Nottingham Forest in round three.
