ON-THE-WHISTLE MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 2-1 Chelsea U23
Two headers from Raphael Branco and Nathan Delfouneso got Swindon Town's EFL Trophy campaign off to a perfect start, as they ran out 2-1 winners against Chelsea U23s.
Branco nodded home a Sean Murray corner after 18 minutes to give Swindon the lead against the Premier League side's development team.
Delfouneso doubled the hosts' advantage with a header of his own in the 61st minute to put the Robins out of site.
On his home debut, deadline day signing from Watford Sean Murray got two assists from two set pieces.
Chelsea substitute Mukhtar Ali got the visitors back into the match with a rasping effort in the 80th minute, but it was not enough as Town held on for the three points.
Chelsea forced chances of his own, and came closest when England Under-18 international Mason Mount hit the underside of the crossbar with a long-range strike that beat Will Henry in the Swindon goal all ends up, but fortunately for the youngster, the ball bounced out and away.
Henry debutised in goal for the season due to regular Lawrence Vigouroux being unavailable for the Bury game on Saturday.
The 18-year-old was not tested too much by the inexperienced Chelsea outfit, however he was called upon on two occasions by midfielder Charlie Wakefield who fired two shots straight at him.
Mount, too, had a speculative shot from a long way out late on, but Henry
Wakefield also pinged a shot wide of the post mid-way through the first half.
Town also had other opporunities as well as their two goals, most notably when Jermaine Hylton's pass across the face of goal was cleared by acting defender Dijon Sterling as Luke Norris was ready to pounce for the easy tap-in.
As the clock ticked down towards the 90th-minute mark, Man of the Match Sean Murray appeared to be fouled in the area - the referee Graham Horwood thought nothing of it though and waved play on. Delfouneso then shot a powerful shot, but was kept out by Bradley Collins in the Chelsea goal.
Much of the build-up to the controversial cup tie centred around the match attendance - which was 1,961.
