ON-THE-WHISTLE MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 6-2 Newport County (FA Youth Cup)

A brace each from Swindon striker Sol Pryce and midfielder Ollie Rejek helped 10-man Town romp into the second round of the FA Youth Cup for the second season running.

Sol Pryce and Ollie Rejek gave Swindon a 2-0 lead in the first half, despite a Jacob Bancroft red card inbetween the two goals, but Newport roared back in the second half and levelled the game at 2-2.

Luke Haines headed in a Jordan Edwards free-kick in the 77th minute and Pryce finished matters with a goal in the 82nd before Rejek and substitute Teoman Atik added two late goals for a resounding 6-2 scoreline after a frenzied 12 minutes.

Striker Pryce bundled Swindon into a 1-0 lead on the 11-minute mark as Town started the FA Youth Cup tie brightly.

Bancroft made life difficult for Alan McLoughlin's young Reds just three minutes later though when a bad tackle on Newport's Jay Williams resulted in a straight red card for the left winger.

Despite being down a man, Swindon doubled their lead through midfielder Rejek, who scored with an impressive finish.

A long ball up pitch by Wilf White picked out Pryce and, with Newport keeper Lewis Webb out of his goal, Pryce cut the ball back to Rejek who hit a shot in off the bar to make it 2-0.

Newport came out all guns blazing in the second half though and got themselves back in the game just two minutes after the restart as Michael Cook headed in a right-sided cross by winger Owura Edwards.

In the blink of an eye, Swindon's two-goal lead had been completely wiped out as, from their own corner, Town lost the ball and Newport launched a counter-attack with substitute Lewis Collins.

Lightning Collins left Paolo Giamattei for dead and he had the simple task of slotting past Archie Marshall for 2-2 in the 53rd minute.

Haines headed Swindon back into the lead after he was picked out by Jordan Edwards and soon after it was 4-2 when Pryce convered another cross by Edwards.

Rejek settled all nerves with a superb long-range goal in the closing stages.

Swindon started the game brightly and could have been in the lead as early as the fourth minute, however Pryce's first touch let him down after he was picked out superbly by Joe Romanski, and Pryce's close-range effort was easily saved.

Three minutes later Jordan Edwards lashed a half-volley miles over the bar following Ralph Graham's chest back. The effort was poor, but it was a second early sign a Swindon goal was coming, and it duly did after 11 minutes.

As the clock reached the quarter-hour, Pryce had another go at goal, but this time his effort from the edge of the box was drilled over.

Bancroft was then sent off and Newport began to get a foothold on the match, although Matthews was never really troubled. The first time he was called into action, all he had to do was watch a Cook header sail into his arms following a cross by Owura Edwards.

Joe Hunt then curled a free-kick narrowly over the bar shortly before Rejek's goal that doubled the lead of the hosts.

The half ended with Pryce sending a half-volley from the edge of the box narrowly wide and a long-range Josh Williams easily saved again by Swindon keeper Matthews.

Newport got two quick-fire goals to tie up the game, but Swindon stayed strong and rallied with a flurry of goals in the last 12 minutes.

Haines, who is usually a midfielder but was deployed at centre-back powered in a header from Edwards' superb crossed free-kick to calm nerves in the Swindon camp as the team that was a man light retook the lead.

Pryce got his second when he got on the end of a left-sided Edwards cross and Rejek got his second as well when he let fly from distance and, from seeemingly nowhere, Swindon had a 5-2 lead.

It got even better for the young Reds in second-half stoppage time when Germany-born substitute Teoman Atik scrambled in a sixth just two minutes after coming on.
