OPPOSITION INSIGHT: Shrewsbury Town
Ahead of Swindon's crucial clash with Shrewsbury on Saturday, Total Sport spoke to Lewis Cox of the Shropshire Star to get the lowdown on the Shrews.
Saturday is a massive game between two relegation rivals but a Swindon win would have them seven points ahead of Shrewsbury. Will a Shrewsbury defeat signal that they could be going down?
"While the clubs are so close in terms of positions and points, I don't think it's the be-all-and-end-all.
"A prime example of that is Shrews' festive period, they lost three from three (mainly thanks to some dismal refereeing, and yes I am neutral!) but are still just a point from climbing out the drop zone.
"Nobody is really cutting adrift and one result could have a big bearing on things, there's a long old way to go.
"Swindon will look healthy with a seven-point advantage but I fancy (Shrewsbury) Town to escape their current predicament, with or without result on Saturday."
Three players have arrived at Shrewsbury since the opening of the January window. Who are they and what do you know about them?
"Shrews have signed Aristote Nsiala - a big, powerful defender from Hartlepool. He played under Paul Hurst at Grimsby.
"Alex Rodman, a athletic and direct winger with ability has come in from Notts County - again played under Hurst at Grimsby.
"They've also took Freddie Ladapo on loan, he spent the first half of the season with Oldham from parent club Palace, where he came from non-league.
"I've been encouraged by the signings, they're low-key, granted, but supporters trust Hurst's judgement and he won't want to sign any more deadwood. He's been looking forward to having his own players."
Shrewsbury only narrowly avoided relegation last year. Are the club at a division above their station or is there room for improvement in the near future?
"They just about survived the drop last year under Micky Mellon but, when things were going drastically wrong this term Hurst came in and very much steadied things.
"They haven't climbed out of the drop zone yet, but very much closed the gap and are on the fringes despite a poor Christmas.
"Hurst has tightened them up and it will now be interesting to see what he can do having signed some players. Has said from beginning when appointed in October that this season's target was survival."
What is the team news for Saturday?
"I expect two new signings to start. Ladapo in for Ivan Toney, joint top scorer has returned to parent club Newcastle.
"Nsiala will start too, in for the injured Olly Lancashire at CB. Fellow defender Ryan McGivern (shoulder) is out, as is Jack Grimmer (ankle). Joe Riley will return from a minor knee op for Grimmer which is a boost.
"The other new signing Alex Rodman will be on the bench, having not played much football - that's my guess anyway.
"AJ Leitch-Smith, a striker, is a frustrating long-term absence, his knee ligament problem has been going on and on."
What player(s) should Swindon fans be concerned about?
"Swindon should look out for Louis Dodds.
"He'll play in the No.10 role and is joint top scorer with Toney with seven. He can be a class apart on his day as fans will know from Port Vale days but can't do everything alone.
"Aside from him, winger Shaun Whalley, who has recently returned from injury, is always a pacy threat. Plus I expect one of the new boys to have some sort of say this weekend!"
Finally, What sort of game are you expecting?
"In truth I'm expecting it to be nervy and edgy because of the significance but to pan out similarly to how it did at Greenhous Meadow in October.
"It wasn't the most memorable of games but I remember Swindon's football impressing me. They were 3-5-2 with Nathan Thompson starring, I know he's coming back from a knock so that'll be interesting.
"Hurst talked about being wary of Swindon's football - and not letting them settle into a rhythm, so high intensity is key for Shrews."
