Peter Shirtliff joins STFC as first-team coach

PETER SHIRTLIFF has re-joined Swindon Town as a member of Richie Wellens backroom staff Swindon Town confirmed earlier today. Read below as the squads latest addition spoke to the local press.

Having helped take the Robins to the League One playoff final in 2010 when in the position of assistant manager during the era of Danny Wilson’s tenure, Shirtliff returns to SN1 now tasked with helping turning round a season of misery for Swindon Town.

Speaking to the press following his confirmed appointment, Shirtliff said:

“I had a few personal things to attend to before coming, but now I’m here I’m pleased.

“I think it’s wise of him [Wellens] to get someone in like myself,”

“At the age that I am I’ve been in the game a long time and you do things a little better and in a more reflective way.

“If I can pass things onto him from the sideline and during the week then I’ll probably be like a bit of a mentor to him [Wellens].

“He actually asked me to go in when he was at Oldham but I was working for another club at the time,” he said.

“But when he asked me to come here I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve been here before, I know the potential and am excited.

“It’s strange because last time we were here we had the playoff final and the following season was a bit difficult losing two strikers who score you fifty goals.

“That’s all in the past and a lot has happened between now and then. We’ve got eightenn games left this season and I’m looking forward to getting as many points as we can and in the playoffs.

“I know a few of the players here but I was working for a club in League One so my priority has mainly been watching League One players,”

“I’ve been in two sessions now and I’ve been pleasantly impressed with the players attitudes.

“Consistency is key between now and the end of the season,” concluded Shirtliff.
