PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Cambridge United v Swindon Town

Good morning and welcome to Total Sport Swindon’s first live blog of the week as our reporter Ryan Walker brings you all the key updates from the County Ground as Swindon Town travel to face Cambridge United in the EFL Cup tomorrow evening. Join us from 8.30am as we speak to Head Coach Ben Garner to get his reaction to the weekend victory over Scunthorpe and preview tomorrow’s cup clash.

8:51AM

That concludes today's press conference.

8:51AM

Garner on Swindon players receiving Covid vaccine:

"I know the medical staff have had conversations with players regarding this but I haven't gone in and spoke to players about this.

I think it's a personal choice and we as a club can't enforce that. There were conversations very early on from medical staff with each individual player when they came in regarding the jab.

That's a personal choice and would be the same for anyone in any walk of life. We treat them as people first."

8:49AM

Garner on Scunthorpe performance:

"I wasn't surprised at the performance and the application because I had seen that in training, but I was surprised at our fitness and endurance levels in the closing stages.

In my mind that was the period I thought we had only had two weeks, so that was a pleasant surprise.

I thought the way we managed the last 15 minutes was excellent as well. I've seen the character and quality of this group and I can't speak highly enough of them."

8:42AM

Garner on Kaine Kesler-Hayden:

"We're assessing players this morning and they will be in the next hour but there is nothing major there."

8:41AM

Garner on his best XI:

"I think we have a core of about 14 players, I would like that to be 16 players and think we could then pick a very good side from that core."

8:40AM

Garner on transfers:

"I'd like one or two more in as quick as possible and will then take a step back to assess the situation."

8:39AM

Garner on first home game:

"The away fans were incredible on Saturday and I think it will be an amazing atmosphere for our first game.

The immediate focus however is tomorrow night at Cambridge."

8:38AM

Garner on injuries:

"Akin Odimayo was back in yesterday and we blew the cobwebs off him and he will back in with the squad today.

Jordan Lyden was off with Covid for a while as well but he is back win today. It's important he is fit and is mentally ready to play.

We have a couple of players to assess today but haven't picked up any long-term injuries from Saturday."

8:36AM

Garner on Ellis Iandolo:

"I think Ellis could play in five different positions and do a great job.

We have so much versatility in this squad and that is something we need.

Ellis is certainly one of those versatile players."

8:35AM

Garner on team selection:

"No one that played Saturday had completed 90 minutes pre-season.

We're not going to be silly with the players, we will take care of them but likewise feel a few players deserve a chance.

The whole team was fantastic on Saturday but it was great for two teenagers to make their full league debuts.

They fitted in seamlessly and it was great to see how mature these young players are."

8:33AM

Garner on EFL Cup:

"We will make a few team changes but this is an opportunity and it gives players an opportunity to fight for a shirt.

We are underdogs for tomorrow given the circumstances we have had, Cambridge had a fantastic season last season but that won't faze us.

We look forward to the challenge of going there."

8:32AM

Garner on post-Scunthorpe:

"It was really good on the coach and straightaway we were focusing on recovery.

There is a very good move but we weren't getting carried away and are now focused on tomorrow night against Cambridge.

Players are back in training today and will travel down tomorrow morning."

8:31AM

Ben Garner has joined us.
