PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Carlisle United v Swindon Town
Good morning and welcome back to another Friday morning Press Conference Live blog as we speak to Swindon Town Head Coach Ben Garner ahead of Swindon's trip to Carlisle United in League Two tomorrow. Join Total Sport Swindon's Ryan Walker from 8.25am as he brings you all the big news from the pre-match press conference.
Garner on his time at Swindon:
"We constantly reflect and it has been an intense season with the timeframe of when we came in but all in all when we came in if we said we would be in this position with 16 games left then we would absolutely have taken it. We have given ourselves a fantastic shot at not only the playoffs but also automatic promotion. We have nothing to lose and go and play with bravery and courage in every game. We attack and try to win as many games as we can and hopefully we can make it a season to remember.
"I would have to say so [finishing in playoffs or getting promotion] would be an overachievement. Things can be easily forgotten in football and when you're odds on for relegation with just six or seven players it has been a monumental effort from everyone at the club. PLayoffs, promotion, would be an unbelievable achievement and that is what we are pushing to do."
Garner on Louie Barry:
"I thought he did very well as an 18-year-old making his full debut last week. He won a penalty, should have had another and got into goalscoring opportunities and created for other players. It doesn't get much better than that for your full debut. He is very mature for his age.
?The bravery to go to Barcelona, the decision to come back to Aston Villa, the bravery to go to Ipswich on your first loan and then the bravery to drop down a division and come here to prove himself says a great deal about his character. He is growing in confidence every week and we have really high hopes for him for the rest of the season and what he can do for this football club."
Garner on the danger of playing relegation contending teams:
"You have to respect every team in the league but as you do get towards the end of the season teams who that are fighting to stay in the league it is definitely fighting, survival instincts and extra motivation that comes into play. We need to have that as we want to get back into those playoff places and win as many of these 16 games as we can. We understand Carlisle have got their fight but with all due respect that isn't our concern. We want the points."
Garner on January signings 'settling in':
"I think very much so [we are seeing the best of them]. They have done great and they haven't had the time that we had at the start of the season. They have had to do it in games both fitness-wise and the way we play. They are up to speed, physically they are there now and tactically we are improving all the time. I expect us to improve now from here on in."
Garner on denying team's momentum:
"We don't want to give any team momentum and we have to fully concentrate. I want the players to express themselves as they did against Scunthorpe and we are going there to win the game and take 3 points."
Garner on Scunthorpe victory lifting team:
"I think the mood had generally be pretty good and this is a new group who are forming relationships on and off the pitch. This is a good mood and a good dressing room and that will be really important as we move towards the end of the season."
Garner on Keith Millen:
"I know him from my time at Crystal Palace and he is a good coach who is at a club like Scunthorpe that are fighting for their lives. Possibly me knowing him gives us an advantage but you have to work with the players you have got and you always look at what's in front of you and base things off that. We go there with a game plan and looking to win."
Garner on Ellis Iandolo's position:
"You need that flexibility in the squad and we are fortunate with the likes of Ellis and Rob Hunt we have players who can play in different positions. The key thing for Ellis this season has been staying fit and he is a great lad who is really maturing as a football player."
Garner on storm disrupting Swindon's plans:
"We planned ahead and have had three really good training days and are just fine-tuning things today. We have flexibility today on what we can do outside and inside. We've had to be slightly more creative than what we usually need to be."
Garner on Midfield v Carlisle:
"The lovely thing with Ricky Aguiar is that he grew into the game and he has matured a lot this season and had a really good loan at Chippenham. Players were brought in to get opportunities and as always when there is an injury or suspension then players get their chance."
Garner on Injuries:
"Ben Gladwin has some hamstring damage from Saturday and that rules him out. We have an idea how long he will be out for and it is certainly a few games but hopefully we can get him back wuickly. Jack Payne is ticking boxes daily, he hasn't completed a full training session yet but he is getting there. Jonny Williams is ok and will be available tomorrow. Dion Conroy is out for tomorrow but should be back next week. His scans are all good, he just needed an injection in his achilles."
Garner on #FindJoe Campaign:
"We haven't found him that I'm aware o. I'm not on social media but it has raised a lot of awareness about food banks and it is doing some good which is great. Football has always been a working class sport and it was a luxury for me and my friends growing up. Football should be for everyone and we need to make sure we don't price families out of this wonderful sport."
