Let's Talk
What can we expect from the 2024/2025 season of the English Premier League?
After this summer’s European Championship the countdown to the new Premier League season has been long, but finally after almost three months away, the Premier League is set to return.
The most competitive league in the world, last year will live long in the memory as Manchester City made history by winning a fourth successive Premier League title, the first team in English football history to win four successive top flight championships.
However, with this rumoured to be Pep Guardiola’s final season at the club, there will be plenty of teams who will be vying for City’s crown. With the race for the title set to be intense, as well as battle for Europe and the race to beat the drop. In this article Aladár Kollár will take us through everything we need to keep an eye on over the upcoming season.
Can anyone dethrone Manchester City?
‘Excellent, fantastic, we’re so proud. But now we’re going for five in a row.’
Although the Premier League is the most watched league with fans all over the world, there is a fear that in recent times the league is starting to become like the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, with Man City dominating all before them.
City will once again start the new season as the team to beat. Happy with the squad he has carried over from last year, Guardioala has sanctioned very few additions but has allowed Julian Alvarez to depart.
As with every season, the question for City will be motivation but over the last few years Guardiola simply hasn’t allowed for complacency to kick in and as the quote above indicates, you suspect that will be the case once again this year.
Hoping to throw down the challenge to City will be Arsenal. The runners up in the last two seasons, many believe that now is the time for Arsenal to strike and for many they will start the season as title favourites.
Boasting the best defence in the league, Arsenal have an exciting front line which could still be added to in the last few weeks of the deadline.
Containing an exceptionally balanced team, it’s been twenty years since the Gunners last tasted success and this year could finally be the season where their long title drought comes to an end.
Liverpool are the other team that many think could challenge. With Jurgen Klopp enjoying himself in Spain, Arne Slot is the new man at the helm and Liverpool’s performances in pre-season, particularly the form of Dominik Szoboszlai has caught the eye.
Still containing a core of players that won the club’s first title, many who wager on sports in Hungary, still believe that Liverpool should challenge.
With three class teams raring to hit the ground running, this season’s title race could well go down to the wire.
The race for Europe
With both Chelsea and Manchester United going through a rebuilding period, a space in last season’s top 4 duly opened up and it was Aston Villa and Unai Emery who took full advantage and it is they who will play in the Champions League next season.
Despite having strengthened their squad for another crack at a top four season, the battle for the Champions League and Europe is likely to be hugely intense.
Tottenham finished fifth last season and now in their second full year under Ange Postecoglou they will hope to muscle back in on the top four.
Manchester United have kept faith with Erik Ten Hag and under the new INEOS ownership they seem to have made some savvy signings and will desperately hope to have a much better season than last where they finished eighth.
Chelsea are now managed by Enzo Maresca following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino. Once again Chelsea have been hugely active in the transfer market, but the jury remains out on the majority of the players that have joined the club.
The Chelsea hierarchy has high demands of the group they have expensively assembled and a failure to reach the top four could have huge future ramifications on the club.
Newcastle, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Brighton are all clubs who will hope to stake their claims for a European finish.
The battle to beat the drop
The Premier League is where everyone wants to be and it’s slightly ominous for the three newly promoted clubs that at the end of last season all three clubs that had been promoted the season before ended up being relegated.
Fans of Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich will hope to avoid a similar fate to their predecessors.
The most exciting of the promoted trio have to be Ipswich. Due to make their first Premier League appearance since 2001/2002, the Tractorboys have achieved the rare feat of having been promoted to the Premier League in two successive seasons from League 1 and the Championship and they won’t hold any fears of mixing it up with the big boys.
Despite boss Kieran McKenna being highly in demand, McKenna has decided to stay with the club and they could well spring a major surprise or two. For McKenna, he won’t change his style, ‘my principles are really, really strong and I don't think I will ever go away from them.’
The favourites to get relegated, much of their league hopes will rest on their home form and they will hope to get off with a bang when they host Liverpool on the opening weekend.
Both Leicester and Southampton will have an uphill task of staying afloat but they will hope to drag in the likes of Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Everton into the relegation dogfight.
Expect action and drama
The Premier League can captivate like no other league in the world. With rocking stadiums and thousands of fans living every kick and every moment, this season looks incredibly exciting.
The title race looks evenly pitched between three of the best and biggest teams in the world and there are a host of talented teams who are trying to muscle in on the action. Whilst at the other end of the table teams will be battling it out for every point to maintain their status in the world’s best league.
With the action set to kick off this weekend, strap yourself in for another enthralling season.
