Website 0330 002 1993Most had believed Swindon’s season was over after Richie Wellens returned to the County Ground with his Leyton Orient side and took all three points after a lacklustre performance from the hosts.
However, eight days and three goals later, Swindon’s Groundhog Day end to the season has once again circled back around to the start where victory could see them back into the top seven, were Sutton to fail to beat Crawley at home.
Their opponents will be tough to gage as Forest Green finally managed to get over the line and seal promotion to League One after their draw with Bristol Rovers on Saturday, having struggled for form in the second half of the season following a record setting first few months, and so can take their foot off the gas (or not gas in their case).
But they are still going for the title, and with Exeter just three points behind, they still face a fight to earn the right to anoint themselves champions.
Their form of late has been patchy at best, with just two wins in five and also having suffered a humbling 4-0 loss to struggling Barrow.
But their fantastic 2021/22 campaign was acknowledged in Sunday’s EFL awards as Kane Wilson beat out his teammate Matty Stevens to player of the season, and those two were joined by Nicky Cadden in the team of the season.
However, Stevens will not be in the line-up at the County Ground after his season ended a few weeks ago against Scunthorpe.
For Swindon, it is not yet clear whether League Two’s goalkeeper of the season Jojo Wollacott will return and a late call will be made on whether he or Lewis Ward lines up between the sticks.
Were it to be Ward, he will feel immense confidence having had a spectacular outing in the reverse fixture, where Town won 2-0 at the New Lawn, with Harry McKirdy and Tyreece Simpson getting the goals.
But Forest Green’s last visit to SN1 was what turned out to be the last game of the truncated 2019/20 season, with the Green winning that one 2-0, and overall since their promotion to the football league in 2017, both sides have won four of their clashes with two draws.
