PREVIEW: Swindon Town vs Scunthorpe United

Swindon Town could potentially be relegated on Saturday, if results at the County Ground and elsewhere go against them.

Strangely enough, Swindon are also potentially just a win away from escaping the bottom four, but as they are three points behind 20th-placed Bury with only two games left, things look bleak for Town.

If Swindon lose at home to promotion candidates Scunthorpe and Bury avoid defeat at home to already-safe Northampton, Town's fate will be sealed.

Swindon could also be down if they lose and Port Vale beat second-placed Bolton at home.

Town may be confirmed as a League Two club even if they pick up a point or three at the County Ground. A draw will not be enough if Bury win and Port Vale and Shrewsbury avoid defeat. Shrewsbury have Southend at home.

Three points might not be enough either, if a tragi-miracle of a Bury win against Northampton, a Shrewsbury victory over Southend as well as Port Vale defeating Bolton and then winning their game in hand at Walsall next Tuesday occurs.

To add injury to insult, captain Nathan Thompson might not be passed fit for the Iron tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm kick-off).

The Swindon skipper, 26, who is no stranger to the treatment table, has a heel problem that has not settled down, despite injections to keep the captain playing on.

Head coach Luke Williams remains optimistic that Thompson will be fit enough to play, but admits he will not play the defender if it is at further risk to his health, and is therefore continually being assessed.

No-one is definitely ruled out of the match, but Williams admits some members of his squad, most likely players such as Ben Gladwin, are still carrying knocks and will either have to play through the pain barrier, or stay at home.

There are no fresh injury concerns, however.

Scunthorpe do not have any health worries either, other than defender Jordan Clarke who had an injection for a toe injury on Thursday.

Graham Alexander's men will not be promoted tomorrow, and they are unlikely to go up automatically full stop but, despite having already secured a play-off spot, they are not expected to field a 'weakened' side.

Scunthorpe have an impressive recent run of results against Swindon, winning three of the last four, including a 4-1 thrashing at Glanford Park earlier this season, but the last Robins win over the Iron came in WIltshire, in 2015, with Raphael Rossi-Branco and Nicky Ajose getting the goals.

The two teams, unsurprisingly, go into the meeting in contrasting form. Scunthorpe are on a run of three straight wins, four in five for good measure, while Swindon are three without a win.
